Babies are born.

Women labour and birth.

Midwives catch.

*how would you feel after having contractions for 2 days you were tld your had 'false labour'?

followed by 'failure to progress'*

I felt fine being told both these things. I have a degree in English and the semantics of the language used was the last thing on my mind at the time!

Just because you don't like the origins of a word doesn't mean it should be obliterated. If language hadn't evolved and it's meanings hadn't changed our world and our communication would be a lot more backward and limited.

I get annoyed by newspaper articles saying "dad delivered baby on kitchen floor" or "GP delivered baby in surgery" or "taxi driver delivered baby on back seat of taxi" like the mother was doing fuck all while these men extracted her baby out of her body Hmm

HaveYouTakenLeaveOfYourCervix · 09/02/2012 11:08

that's what i am thinking. as if the woman is a passive recipiant of heroic good work by someone else.

i could probably drop in something about feminism and patriarchy for chapter 2.

I thought this was going to be a thread complaining about post.

MuslinSuit · 09/02/2012 11:16

Grin I'd buy your thesis if you get published!

OTOH I wasn't bothered about my 'elective' section, but apparently some women would prefer 'planned' or 'unplanned' instead, as 'emergency' sections are rarely blue-light and 'elective' doesn't mean I elected it - didn't have much choice in the matter!

TheBigJessie · 09/02/2012 11:36

FaithHopeAndKevin Totally agree.

There was an awful article once about a husband who "delivered" his child, after checking on youTube. It was the couple's fourth child.

YouOldSlag · 09/02/2012 14:36

Faith Hope and Kevin- I don't think anyone ever give the taxi driver/father more credit than the mother. I honestly don't know anyone who would think that.

I think this is really splitting hairs to be honest.
