to be exhausted for no reason at all?

DS (4mo) has started sleeping 7-8 hours overnight, I'm not ill, I'm not pregnant, so why am I so bloody tired?! I don't mean a bit weary, I mean bone-deep, first trimester-style, need a nap by 4.30pm exhausted! I'm willing myself to stay awake to do DS's last feed which is usually midnight, but I can feel myself nodding off. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now. I've tried doing more exercise as I know this usually increases my energy levels and helps me to get a better quality of sleep - I've done a 5 mile walk along the seafront with the pram this morning and swam 1km this afternoon. I could cry, I was so looking forward to not feeling shattered all the time once DS stopped demanding food constantly!

It's winter!!! It saps your energy as well as having a small baby

lisad123 · 08/02/2012 23:01

Get yourself to GP and get a blood test. There are many reasons for tiredness, most are because you are lacking something but sometimes you may be unwell too.

ssd · 08/02/2012 23:02

where the hell do you get the energy to do a 5 mile walk and a 1km swim nevermindthetime

my kids are older and that'd kill me

cut yourself some slack woman

WorraLiberty · 08/02/2012 23:03

A blood test is a good idea but hopefully it's just winter.

Central heating makes me tired and lack of air around the house.

featherbag · 08/02/2012 23:08

I'll give it a few weeks and if it's no better go to the GP. ssd the walk is easy, the seafront is so beautiful it doesn't feel like any work at all and I can take DS with me for some fresh air - I do feel lucky to live where we do! My mam watches DS while DH and I go swimming once a week, 1km is 40 lengths of the pool which only actually takes 30-40 minutes!

Besides which, ssd, I've just agreed a date to go back to work, I have a uniform to get back into, and I'm fat. I mean, really fat. I wasn't a waif before DS, but need to lose a good 4 stone before we TTC again!

Take a multi vitamin and iron, bet you a pound it works for you! :o)

Or just an iron tablet and vitamin C (to help absorb the iron)

Really, try it, then come back in a few days and tell me how wonderful I am you feel!

yellowraincoat · 08/02/2012 23:10

I'm exhausted too, think it's this cold weather.

featherbag · 08/02/2012 23:11

Bizarrely JustOne, that honestly hadn't occurred to me, I'll try that!

Spatone (liquid iron supplement) and Berocca first thing every morning really helped me. Tip from Nigella but it totally works.

4mo is a hard time, hang in there. I feel your pain re: weight- I have 4st to lose too- not fun!

Dappylittlemomma · 08/02/2012 23:33

Breast feeding seems to sap energy, I found. Also entertaining a tiddler all day everyday is tiring. Hope energy returns soon x

chattingbubbles · 08/02/2012 23:38

I felt the same when my ds was around that age. I was worried I was really ill but I think I was just shattered from months of broken sleep. My advice would be try to make time for yourself (that old chestnut!), if I could turn back time I would have booked ds in with a childminder for half a day each week to have a proper break - but I know some people would frown upon this!

featherbag · 08/02/2012 23:38

We had to go to combination feeding at 6wo, then ff at 12wo Dappy, for reasons I don't have the energy to go into (still somewhat bitter), so although I remember how much bf saps energy, that's sadly not the cause!

Chatting, I have a hoarde of aunties as well as my DM just itching to take him off me for the day, but I find myself reluctant to take them up on their kind offers knowing I'm going back to work in 8 weeks!

Berrocca works for me!

Dappylittlemomma · 09/02/2012 11:24

Sorry, just presumed you were bf-ing as you said you did the late night feed. Maybe that could be a good daddy-bonding/mummy-having-an-early-night thing sometimes? I'd recommend a half day to chill with childcare, then you'd probably get much more out of your time with DS. wish I had more as I know just how you feel with unexplained complete exhaustion. I also reckon it could be due to months of sleep deprivation and pregnancy/birth- just my theory. X

aldiwhore · 09/02/2012 11:33

Was going to suggest what Justone has already done! Also some Vit D and zinc. These may not be proven cures for nothingness, but they work for me (I have a tendancy to get slightlu aenemic for no apparant reason - can't spell it though).

I'd still get to the docs and have blood tests. It could something a straightforward as having a baby and as baby is now sleeping, your body is out of 'red alert' mode and you're catching up?

Hope you feel better soon.

Hardgoing · 09/02/2012 11:33

Perhaps you are a little unrealistic about exactly how energetic you would feel after months of sleepless nights and the process of birth, or perhaps low in iron/vitamins. I found it took me a long time to get back to feeling ok, and I also got every virus going for a year or two after my births but then I am old and knackered as well

aldiwhore · 09/02/2012 11:34

Oh and much as I love berroca, its got a few nasties in so I'm told. The boots own brand soluable multi-vit is cheap and excellent, turns your wee neon yellow.

dapplegrey · 09/02/2012 12:12

Go to your GP and have your thyroid levels tested. My life was blighted for years by an under active thyroid but now, thanks to a daily dose of thyroxine, I have got my life back.

featherbag · 09/02/2012 12:27

Will try all suggestions, going to get to fat fighters too as my diet could be better and the extra weight can't be helping!

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 09/02/2012 12:29

Berocca tablets are my best friend when I start feeling knackered and lethargic. They really do work for me.

featherbag · 09/02/2012 12:50

No need to apologise Dappy, DH and I take turns at doing the late night feed, but while he can go to bed and sleep for a couple of hours beforehand, sleeping for such a short time makes me feel sick and stops me getting back to sleep, so I tend to just stay up when it's my turn.
