Overheard two mums - one with a visibly overweight dd (not judging just a fact). Mum says out of earshot of dd that dd is paranoid about her weight. AIBU to think that the dd isn't paranoid but just aware she is indeed overweight!

It's just a slightly misused turn of phrase. The mother surely meant that her DD was worried/sensitive about her weight.

The mother was probably warning the other mother not to mention it.

How old was the DD?. I think very much depends on age.

In the case of an older DD (7-8+) then yes YANBU.

I think although may be technically right I also think its a turn of phrase that doesn't mean the mum is in denial.

My eldest is constantly aware of his weight, and is 'paranoid' that everyone judges him on it. That isn't to say I'm not aware nor that I'm doing nothing about it.

Other than that your op is judgey, smug, nosey and gossipy, for that YABU.
