To think that 'between 9.30 and 11'…

? does NOT mean 'turn up on the dot of 11 and then blithely announce that it'll take at least half-an-hour'??!

We're doing a straightforward re-mortgage of a house we rent out and part of the deal is they want to value it. Absolutely fine, no problem. We arrange the time, I am there with DD2 (20 mths). At 11 I prepare to leave as the appointment time is over. Valuer woman turns up and is all 'sorry for the misunderstanding you stupid cow'.

I got petulant (I'm not very good at confrontation and default to 'stroppy teenager' mode) and we agreed to reschedule. DD2 was bored (I'd taken books, toys, snacks etc. but we'd done them all in that time) and it would have been a rush to pick up DD1 if we'd waited.

Honestly, how bloody hard is it to stick to the agreed time??

(Do feel free to just ignore my post, I'm just venting.)

YABU. I would had understood that to mean she would be arriving between 9.30 and 11. You've now cut off your nose to spite your face, as she would have been gone in about half an hour I expect and now you have to give up more time to back there and wait for her again.

JustHecate · 06/02/2012 12:31

nope. YABU Grin

coming between 9:30 and 11 means exactly that. Expect a knock on your door at any point between 9:30 and 11.

Like tesco delivery. Book it between 10 and 12 and expect it at any time between 10 and 12. knock on your door at 12 noon exactly and you have to start unpacking.

I had a washing machine engineer supposed to come between 12 & 6 last week. Arrived at 10 past 6 (he did phone at 5.30 to say he was running late!) and then was still working at 7.30.

Annoyed the hell out of me as I had to order a Chinese for supper as I couldn't get into the kitchen to cook, (on a v. tight budget so haven't ordered delivery food in over 5 years + son on special diet). Messed with bedtime routine etc.

And to top it off he's back again in my kitchen now cos he didn't fix it the first fooking time! ( 9-12 slot this time cos I thought I'd be clever but am getting peckish & wanna put a slow cooker beef stew on for supper ggggrrr!).

YABU - if her appt was for between 9.30 - 11 and she turned up at 11...she is on time!

I'm sat freezing waiting for the plumber who was supposed to come friday then couldnt who was then coming 'this morning' and now is due around 1.30!

MinnieBar · 06/02/2012 12:54

If, as has always happened before, the visit meant a cursory glance of 'yep, it's a house' followed by plucking a number out of thin air a carefully researched market evaluation, then fine.

Tesco delivery - takes two minutes, again no problem.

But half an hour?? On top of the arranged time??

I know I'll have to go back again. But now I know I'll have to wait I'll arrange it for a time when I don't have DD2 and I'll just sit on my arse and knit or read my kindle. Which is fine.

Hopefully I can cunningly pick a time when the tenants are in and then I don't have to go at all.

but the arranged time was to arrive at any point between 9:30 and 11, wasn't it? So it wasn't half an hour on top of the arranged time. The arranged time to knock on your door and begin the appointment was any time between 930 and 11. That's the time to get in, so to avoid problems, you assume they are going to be arriving at the latest time stated and fanny about for an hour Grin

Thank you for telling me IABU in such a polite and reasonable manner Hecate. Grin
