I am 6 weeks pregnant, 5ft 2 and 12st1lb (so very overweight :( ). I was trying to loose weight before fell pregnant and lost about 1/2 a stone. I am over the moon to be pregnant but am so cross with myself that I am so overweight and now cannot do anything to loose weight. I have recently joined the gym and have been doing 30 mins on the cycling machine 2/3 times a week but would like to increase this to 60 mins 4/5 times a week in an attempt to loose a few more pounds before my first weigh in with the midwife (!) and thereafter to try and keep my weight gain to only what is necessary for baby. AIBU? Any advice?

  1. Take medical advice.

Training is very individual. Paula can still nock out a 35 min 10km when preggo, I can't do it when on top form. 35 mins on stationary bike at what wattage? Is it spin or just you? It doesn't sound like huge amounts of exercise.

I would concentrate on healthy eating and moderate exercise, I think it depends how fit you were before you got pregnant.

If the cycling is something you have been doing or a long time, then it's probably safe to up it a little bit, but I wouldn't advise upping it as much as you are suggesting.

Could you go swimming and do aqua natal classes instead? Or do more walking? I would speak to the fitness instructors at your gym. You probably pay a lot of money to be a member so you should take advantage of the staff that are tere to advise you. If you have chat with your midwife as well, she will give you advice and you will be able to work out the amount and type of exercise that is right for you.

Second the vote for get yourself checked out by the GP, I rode until I was 5 months, and then only stopped because I had a crash and bumped my belly which terrified me. I was mountain biking though, so very different to being on a static bike.
