to think you shouldn't leave your car engines running?

First thing in the morning all I can hear from around 6am through until 9am is the sound of car engines runnings.
It provides a constant hum in the background and pollutes the air.

Can I ask why people don't cover their car windows with sheets? Or invest in de-icer?
My dh gets up at 5.15am to leave for work at 6am but he wouldn't dream of letting his car engine run, thus disturbing our neighbours. He throws the kettle over the car and sprays it with de-icer. Yes ok it's a trifle cold when he gets in the car, but it soon warms up.

So what is it with these selfish people who come out of their houses, start up their cars and then leave the engines running for half an hour whilst they have a cup of tea? How can they afford the petrol?

If you do this, please stop. It pollutes the air and I can guarantee that your neighbours are thoroughly pissed off with it.

Dinosaur - OP cant be sure its going down the gutter and not freezing on the road / path, as presumably she drives off the instant the car starts lest it runs for 10 seconds more than it has to. But read the thread, its clear what the issue is, its pollution, no wait, it wakes her up, no hang on, its illegal.....no hold your horses, the curtains get mold on them because she cant open her windows......oh I dont know what the issue is.....

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 06/02/2012 16:25

poor people do not have garages! fact modern cars if switched on and then off within 2 -5 minutes CANNOT be restarted 4 30-60 mins as engine management system interprets same as fault and factors in a cut out 2 protect very expensive engine , bummer when it happens in fuel station JUST round corner |!

Dinosaurdrip · 06/02/2012 16:29

Grin at Gribble. I am afraid I left my diesel car running for at least 15 minutes this morning outside my neighbours house and as was stated earlier in this thread it didn't actually warm my car up at all inside but at least I could see clearly. To be perfectly honest I didn't think about by neighbours I was more intent on getting my car in a safe state to drive, the same as my neighbours would do with their diesel car also to which I would not bat an eyelid.

ArielNonBio · 06/02/2012 16:29

Ok, but how often does it get SO COLD in this country that the INSIDE of the car windscreen freezes? I have never seen such a phenomenon.

Just out of interest, why is it dangerous to put a baby in a car seat with a coat on? I haven't heard that one.

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 06/02/2012 16:30

OH , NEARLY FORGOT, try telling police officer the reason u drove off unable 2 see clearly, inc. clearing all windows and roof , (yeah, i know!) is u did nt want 2 upset the neighbours ! small kids during winter etc etc ..........

Dinosaurdrip · 06/02/2012 16:32

Wow i never knew that maybelate that would be extremely annoying. Sadly I am too poor for a garage or an extremely modern car but that would be good info to know for when I win the lottery this week. :)

Ariel I've had ice on the inside of my car windscreen before. I'm in Yorkshire and it does get that cold. It's usually quite easy to clean off with a cloth, unlike the ice outside which needs deicer or a scraper.

My mother tells stories of the ice inside the windows of her house when she was a child in the 50's.

OP when we lived elsewhere we had a neighbour who would start his motorbike outside our house every morning at 5:15am and leave it running for a good 15 or 20 minutes before revving it a bit and driving off. I would lie in bed on my good ear (I'm deaf in one of them) trying to blot out the noise before I was wide awake, silently seething but too tired and lazy to go out and shout at him. Until one morning when the scary woman from over the road shouted out of her window to let him know which of his orifices she was planning to shove his crash helmet up if he woke her again. There was blissful silence the following morning Grin

Blimey. Well wonders will never cease.

TheRhubarb · 06/02/2012 16:56

NoOne - that neighbour was probably me! Grin

gribble whatever! they probably put boiling water on the windscreen and then swore blind that they didn't.
And who gives a shit whether I am interested in saving the world or am a good neighbour or am too poor to afford a decent car? No-one should park their car outside someone else's house, start it at 6am and then walk away from it for half an hour.
If they do and they live near me then they should expect an earful.

The rest of this thread shows how leaving your car running for more than 5 mins actually does more harm to your engine, is illegal on a public road if left unattended and is completely and utterly unnecessary. That has nothing to do with my feelings on things, they are just nice factual pieces of information that replied to many posters saying how they needed to let the car run to warm up the engine etc etc etc.

I wanted a good moan about this noise nuisance and I had one. I shall speak to the neighbours and feel better for having ranted about it. So ner back!

Which car is that a fact about Maybelater it doesn't happen with mine?

southeastastra · 06/02/2012 16:57

in threads like this i'd hide them at this point rhubarb or you will answering posts forever Grin

i feel your pain and agree with you fwiw!

Dinosaurdrip · 06/02/2012 17:01

I also live in Yorkshire and can verify that iced up windows on the inside is not a myth! It happened at least a couple of times last year in september or October we actually had to use a scraper on our inside as well as outside.

Gribble · 06/02/2012 17:03

sorry OP, it wasnt boiling water as he did it when he still lived at mum and dads, poor sod oh how we took the piss out of him anyway

God we need a sticking out tongue emoticon on here.

valiumredhead · 06/02/2012 17:11

Nor mine may in fact I had to turn mine off the other day as I had forgotten my driving specs, so had to turn the ar off, go back inside then start again. Car coped beautifully :)

valiumredhead · 06/02/2012 17:11

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 06/02/2012 17:12

valiumredhead · 06/02/2012 17:12

So what make car EXACTLY?

Botticelli · 06/02/2012 17:14

Rhubarb , I think you are right,
What is wrong with a scraper?
And a cold car won't kill you.
I think it is laziness and thoughtlessness.
We are turning into a nation of lazy car drivers.
And we should all consider our neighbours a lot more.
And it breaks my heart that the environment is abused so much, and is always last in peoples consideration.
So there!

Agincourt · 06/02/2012 17:15

i thought it was safer to thoroughly warm you car up anyway?

ArielNonBio · 06/02/2012 17:16

Um. If I may, then I would venture that ice on the inside of a windscreen would indicate some kind of humidity and you should be checking for leaky seals and damp.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 06/02/2012 17:24

Possibly. Either way, it does happen.

The baby seat/coat thing is explained here.

ArielNonBio · 06/02/2012 17:28

I see. So it is "thick coats and snowsuits"?

BellaVita · 06/02/2012 18:05

Mine is not on a public road, but my drive!
