Out sledging this morning with DH and 4 DCs DH suddenly goes "there's a dog in those sheep - that's really bad". Owner WAY down the hill shouting and shouting to no avail. Not running. No one nearby doing anything, although hill quite crowded, and sheep getting more and more run about. DH was holding our baby, so I ran down the hill and basically got the dog back to it's owner. Went back to my family (a few dirty looks at first, I think people thought it was my dog). People came up to us and said the farmer wld be in his rights to have dog put down etc, but no one else did anything. There is a sign on the gate asking for dogs to be kept on leads as sheep have died from being chased. The family came up the hill straight towards us and I thought they were either going to thank me or have a go, but they just went past. DH didn't want me to make a scene when we were trying to look after our 4 DC etc...Eg trying to make sure DC2 didn't say "that owner is just like a totally rubbish person" again within earshot! If I'd had my phone I'd have been tempted to take a pic, but what cld anyone have done with it anyway? Just feel Sad that neither we nor anyone else did anything to make them take responsibility. WWYD?

I think you're overreacting...they were rude. You helped. That;s it. There's no need for dissapointment or even to be mullling over it still.
So YABU.

MissVerinder · 05/02/2012 22:58

You did enough helping get the dog back; you can't make them take responsibility.

Farmers are within their rights to shoot dogs worrying sheep, but I don't think they can get them put down after the fact.

The family were probably a bit embarrassed hence the ignoring.

You did all you could to help, so try not to worry about it.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 05/02/2012 22:59

Make them take responsibility?

Surely the time for that was before they let their dog go, not as they were walking past you afterwards?

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 05/02/2012 23:01

I think it's a good thing you were there and willing to chase after and catch the dog, and hopefully the fuckwit owners will think twice before they let it off the lead near a flock of sheep again. I don't know that you could really have done any more - if it had actually attacked a sheep I'd think differently, but you did what you could and prevented that happening, so good on you. You can't make fools take responsibility unfortunately, even the farmer shooting the dog in front of them probably wouldn't do that, some people are just dumb and ignorant and thoughtless and entitled :(

WorraLiberty · 05/02/2012 23:01

I think you're overreacting too

You did your bit, they didn't thank you (probably embarrassed)

Hopefully dog will be on lead next time.

GrimmaTheNome · 05/02/2012 23:01

YABU because you should be proud of yourself that you were the one person who did something. You may have saved the life of sheep and unborn lambs, or of the dog if the farmer had turned up. Well done! Smile

The only thing you did wrong was that when your DC2 said 'that owner is just like a totally rubbish person' you should have said, 'didn't hear that, speak up!'

squeakytoy · 05/02/2012 23:04

what did they say when you took the dog back to them, before they walked past you? did they not say thankyou then?

ChasTittyBeltUp · 05/02/2012 23:12

You should have just thrown snowballs at the dog. And then said "Better than bullets my dear!" when they complained.

Almacks · 05/02/2012 23:28

LOL chas and grimma!

squeaky toy I didn't take the dog back, I just ran down and sort of got between it and some of the sheep in three chunks (obvs not a farming term!), then tried to look big and shout with authority at the dog at which point it decided to listen to it's owner and go back to him.

Glad verdict is "stop mulling' did what you could", I will hopefully now do that and go to sleep!

The owners of that dog were complete and utter berks (to put it VERY nicely). I can understand why you're worked up about it to the point where you wish you'd said more. Hopefully all the people watching the dog and looking annoyed made them realise how selfish they were being by not keeping the dog on a leash near livestock. You did more than most would have!

Agree with IsayHolmes.
