DD needs and antibotic but....

DD has a bad chest infection imho, I think she needs an antibiotic and probably has done for the last few days.

The thing is if I take her to the doctor and she gets one I know she will end up with thrush. this happens every time she has had one. I have discussed this with the doc and he has precribed 4 different ones to date from she was born.

DD is toilet training at the minute and doing quite well and I dont want to set her back, as the thrush is usually worse than the initial illness is there anything i can give her to prevent or lessen the thrush. All the doctor has given in the past is canasteen HC cream

DH thinks I should have brought her to the doctor by now so aibu to hold out?

YABY because if you weigh up the risks, a chest infection can kill whereas thrush is just annoying and, in this case, badly-timed.

AKMD · 05/02/2012 21:18

*YABU even...

HorribleDay · 05/02/2012 21:19

Ah poor thing. Natural live yoghurt by the gallon (eaten) and poss some form of probiotics?

HealthCareProfessional · 05/02/2012 21:20

Pro-biotic yoghurt will help balance the flora and fauna of her digestive tract.

HTH

abbierhodes · 05/02/2012 21:21

I understand your concerns, but I'd take her to the doctor, discuss your concerns and let him/her make the call. AKMD is right, chest infections can have much more serious consequences than upsetting potty training.

PeneloPeePitstop · 05/02/2012 21:22

YABU.
The chest infection could go to bronchitis - mine did.
Give her probiotics (I think Munch Bunch have a range for kids) whilst having the medication and ask for canesten to be prescribed at the same time, and start using when you start the antibiotics to prevent getting too sore.

ZhenThereWereTwo · 05/02/2012 21:22

Just buy some acidophillus capsules, open up and sprinkle into food, or give plain bio yoghurt with honey for the duration and about a week after the anti-biotics finish. If she needs them she needs them, best not to wait and have chest infection develop into pneumonia.

numbertaker · 05/02/2012 21:27

My DC's have had really bad coughs but not been given ABs. Have you tried giving her honey/lemon warm drinks, extra vitamin c.

My DC2 had croup and was not given them. I would get a humidifier for the bedroom, lots of clear liquids, vicks vaporub, a steamy shower to get the mucus moving.

squeakytoy · 05/02/2012 21:28

you shouldnt take any probiotics until after the course of anti-biotics have finished and done their job

lesley33 · 05/02/2012 21:30

YABU
Sorry but untreated chest infections can lead to complications such as permanent lung damage. Your DD may be able to manage without antibiotics, but I doubt you will be able to judge this without medical training. Why not ask GP if DD can manage without antibiotics?

3littlefrogs · 05/02/2012 21:31

Why is that, Squeakytoy? I haven't heard that before.

CelstialNavigation · 05/02/2012 21:35

I was told that too - German pharmacist told us that probiotics would be routinely prescribed with antibiotics in Germany, but you start them when the antibiotic finishes.

squeakytoy · 05/02/2012 21:35

that is what the GP has always told me, and the chemist too..

HorribleDay · 05/02/2012 21:35

The hospital I first worked in routinely gave probiotics with antibios, as did the Macmillan team who recently cared after MIL - is there a specific reason they shouldn't be used together squeakytoy?

Bossybritches22 · 05/02/2012 21:37

Horrible something to do with the absorbtion of the abs I think.

chocolateandcoffee · 05/02/2012 21:38

thanks all I will take her to the doc in the morning.

I honestly did not think of the infection getting worse Blush

will also stock up on probiotics.

Sorry x posted. IIRC I was told the probiotics contain such low levels of active ingredients that they dont interfere with targeted antibiotic therapy but promote the gut's natural bacteria? Tho would make sense thinking about it that the probiotics would be pointless depending on the type of antibiotic (ie one for gastroenteritis)

squeakytoy · 05/02/2012 21:41

My MIL has to take anti-b's regularly as she has recurrent chest infections, and is always told to stop taking any pro-biotic drinks until after the course of ABs has finished.

It makes logical sense to me that one would counteract with the other.

Sirzy · 05/02/2012 21:43

Numbertaker you wouldn't be given antibiotics for croup because it isn't an infection.

I agree with others, please get her checked and use the antibiotics if needed.

HorribleDay · 05/02/2012 21:48

Guess so. I know there have been studies reporting reduced antibiotic induced diarrhoea with concurrent probiotics therapy given but don't know about how this impacts on effectiveness of antibios.

Anyway - take your DD to the GP and discuss concerns - they may do a paediatric version of fluconazole which is oral medication for thrush, which may prevent it?

lucertola28 · 05/02/2012 21:57

Glad you are bringing her to doctor tomorrow.

When taking antibiotics you should take yoghurts/yoghurt drinks with live good bacteria like actimel, most kids like the strawberry ones. This helps to prevent thrush. My gp said it is pointless taking them after the course of antibiotics, this won't do anything to prevent getting thrush if you take them after the course (but I suppose if you get it they can help get over the thrush with medicine/cream for thrush etc.) , you need to have them while on antibiotics. Better to prevent than treat.

I have been on antibiotics a several times over last few years the one time I did not take probiotics etc while on them I got thrush, I started them as soon as I got thrush but was too late and had to use the canestan internal cream stuff.

Everytime before and after that had taken actimels while on antibiotics and the antibiotics worked as they should and did not get thrush so that is what I'd advise and what many different gps I know of advise.

Hope your dd gets well soon!

asiatic · 05/02/2012 22:04

Antibiotics would kill the probiotics, obviously! Antibiotics kill bacteria, probiotics are bacteria, (although they normally aren't really, they are supposed to be, I'm not aware of any evidence that they are anything other than " harmless")
