My dd attends a grammar school (she is in year 10 so gcse's next year).

They are set into 7 groups for Maths and sets 1-4 do IGCSE Maths and sets 5-7 do the gcse in modules throughout year 10 and 11. Several of Dds friends recently got their first module results back....

AIBU to be Shock that many of her friends were upset to get an a and many who got an A were told that they should consider retaking.

In my day we would have been over the moon to get an A Grin

YANBU althoug in Y10 - I would have expected maths to be already banked and moved on to AS @ grammar. Mind did. They made all the B's and below in Y10 do resits as 'failing to perform to potential'. I was abit mardy DS only got an A, he should have walked an A* but just couldnt be arsed to revise

It's normal behaviour at Grammar Schools. We had one girl break down in tears in front of me because she got 1 A in amongst her 12 GCSEs of which 11 were A*.

I told her to shut the fuck up and get a grip whilst I walked off beaming with my 2 A's an a load of B's.

YANBU to think the schools are being ridiculous. They're ridiculous for making Maths a modular course!

noblegiraffe · 05/02/2012 20:39

Depends on what their target was. If they underachieved and should have got an A* then they should be considering retaking.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 05/02/2012 20:39

An A of today is not the same as an A when I was at school, it's more like a B. A* used to be something very few students got but it's not any more. I think it's admirable that they want to get the best possible result.

Unusual for grammars to do modules, they usually do linear. Modules are for lesser mortals who cant cope with a 2 year syllabus revision plan.

letseatgrandma · 05/02/2012 20:43

Presumably when you took your GCSEs, an A was the top mark-so, of course you would have been pleased. These children are then hoping to get an A*-currently the top grade you can get! Todays A is yesterday's B...!

I went to grammar and of 90 girls in the year, about 6 got straight A's across the board. What are we teaching our kids these days?
