turnips and kale in organic boxes

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 05/02/2012 20:29

We've done the organic box thing a few times, but have lost enthusiasm after a few months due to two things: the persistent appearance of turnips and kale (sometimes other green leafy stuff too obscure to name). It becomes such a chore to include the bloody stuff in meals - I know that some slebby chef types will just reach for the pancetta and goose fat and do a quick sauté, but AIBU to think there's a reason these veg don't appear on the shelves of the supermarket?

I don't know how the die-hard organic box people do it. I think they're secretly pretending they like kale and turnips, and do a really good "oooh turnip soup again" face every week Hmm

OP have you tried shredding and stir frying the kale in Chinese style dishes? My dad grows curly kale, and did it with onions, soy sauce and Chinese spice a couple of months ago. It was delicious. Piece of piss too, takes five minutes.

ParsleyTheLioness · 07/02/2012 16:32

Thanks Tunip!

TheParanoidAndroid · 07/02/2012 16:37

Kale and turnips are on every supermarket shelf, surely? Confused

OhyouWickedWickedQuilp · 07/02/2012 16:40

oh yum - am going to try kale pizza on thursday when the next lot arrives.
Am a bit bored of vegetables at the moment - they just dont inspire me despite having the HFW veggie book.

Pandemoniaa · 07/02/2012 16:43

I've no problem with kale or turnips. Provided they are used as animal feed. It might be worth a Comedy Half Hour to bung some in lasagne, mind. But only if I was very bored.

I prefer to eat seasonal vegetables, as it happens. But I could live quite happily without kale and turnips.

Ciske · 07/02/2012 16:47

Mash some potatoes with the kale, add bacon, pile a sausage on top and add mustard, and you have one of the Authentic Dutch Food Classics. Yum yum.

I can't offer much help on the turnip, we had a veggie box for a while and I must confess more often than not, it was thrown out. :(

crunchbag · 07/02/2012 16:52

I second VinoEmeralda's recipe with kale, it's cheap, easy and tasty and perfect winter food. I steam the kale and smoked sausage on top of the potatoes.

crunchbag · 07/02/2012 16:55

Stamppot boerenkool Ciske :o

Ciske · 07/02/2012 16:56

Precies, crunchbag! Grin

VinoEsmeralda · 08/02/2012 19:21

I missed kale desperately missed till we got the box. Always make sure we order the box that has the kale in it!

Ciske - naar de film?

Ciske · 08/02/2012 20:37

The film and the book, Vino. Well spotted. :)

strictlovingmum · 08/02/2012 20:53

Turnip soup with creme fresh and snipped chivesGrin
Kale, panchetta bubble and squeak on olive oil fried shallotsGrin
Kale leaves stuffed with mince meat, rice, seasoning and fresh herbs cooked in oven under the foil, yumGrin
And yes readily available on supermarket fruit and veg section.

ramblingmum · 08/02/2012 21:02

This thread is making me think I should get some kale with next weeks shop

aldiwhore · 08/02/2012 21:04

While I like kale and turnip its not so much an everyday veg as carrot or leek.... but WiseAvocado you are lucky, half my organic sample box was radish.

I do think some organic boxes get it wrong sometimes, too much of random seasonal, not enough 'normal' seasonal.

trixymalixy · 08/02/2012 21:43

Ooh I love turnip!! Mashed with loads of butter or cut up into chunks and roasted in the oven with rosemary.

Kale is nice used as Chinese greens.

HipHopOpotomus · 08/02/2012 22:31

Kale and turnips are in vege dept in my supermarkets. You get them in vege box because they are seasonal. So YABU.

When I got a veggie box (years ago) I looked upon it as a challenge to cook using all I got. Get online - so much info and recipes out there at your fingertips.

(I'd be fine with the kale - wld have to learn more about turnips)

lottiegb · 08/02/2012 22:46

I love kale (and Manatee, you can send me your chard - adore it, wilted with garlic, can't get enough).

Can't you ask not to have a particular thing, or less often? We can.

Yes, we are stockpiling root veg at the moment, it's just because that's what grows in winter. I need to make more soup. We've definitely changed our cooking habits due to the veg box, more potato, less pasta and rice, that's good, it's what the local, seasonal thing is about.

UniS · 08/02/2012 23:03

Thank you for teh new kale ideas. I only have 3 veg options (perpetual rocket, kale and sprouts) to harvest from the garden now the frost has killed off my lettuce and chard and the purple sprouting is not QUITE ready. I like kale cooked in butter with garlic, also good in veg soups. intend to try the lasagne with mushrooms and teh pizza topping idea.

wherearemysocks · 08/02/2012 23:07

I use Riverford too, I have stopped getting their set box though, we kept getting celetiac and Jerusilum artichoke. I just order the veggies I want off their list. I also get milk from there (so I don't have to carry it back from the shops) and I got a nice bottle of wine this week. :)

Jacinda · 08/02/2012 23:07

Turnips are amazing eaten raw. They have a strong taste, similar to horseradish. Good as a snack with bread and butter or shredded and mixed with sour cream or creme fraiche as a side salad.

ParsleyTheLioness · 09/02/2012 09:26

Have done the kale pizza up thread, and yes, it does taste like the chinese seaweed! Did read it and thought, 'Yeah, right...', but it does! So pleased not to waste it when I Cba to make a stir-fry
