School closure

leprechauncream · 05/02/2012 19:49

DD's school website has just announced that the school will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, but reopen on Wednesday. It is in a town in Hertfordshire, so no particular transport problems provided that the roads are gritted etc. I can see why the school may need to close tomorrow but AIBU to think that it is a bit premature to already have announced closure for Tuesday as well?

Perhaps there is a heating problem which won't be fixed until during the day on Tuesday?

Gah, I bloody hate it when they do this. YANBU - they should have plans in place for this kind of thing. Snow in winter, well I never!

I get they might have a heating issue on the Monday, but the Tuesday as well is just taking the piss.

Bossybritches22 · 05/02/2012 19:58

Possibly but they have to make a call to inform all parties so they can make alternative arrangements.

Personally I'd rather know now than run around like a headless chicken on Tues am to arrange Childcare/work cover!

delilahlilah · 05/02/2012 20:01

I agree that I would rather have as much notice as possible. The problem may not be snow. Could be any number of things burst pipes, heating issue, who knows. Wait to find out, then decide if it's reasonable.

NiceViper · 05/02/2012 20:02

Maybe they know they have a boiler/pipes/water supply problem, and have had an estimate for the time needed for repair?

I have very pleasant memories of having a "boiler day" off school one, when owing to an unheated wing they needed to send 6 classes home and I was in one of them!

KittyFane · 05/02/2012 20:02

I should think heating / burst pipes / boiler failure too.
If it's the boiler Mon and Tues fair enough. If it's just closed because of snow, announcing Tues is a bit premature.

leprechauncream · 05/02/2012 20:03

Presdales in Ware. The announcement doesn't say it's because of any heating problems, but because of the snow.

(sorry - x-ed with lots of people!)

AutumnWitch · 05/02/2012 20:03

Try here as a few schools are already reporting that they'll be closed tomorrow.

KittyFane · 05/02/2012 20:05

no such luck at my school, new boiler a few years ago and it's like flipping tropical inside in the winter, we open the windows

Wellthen · 05/02/2012 20:05

Kytti what plans do you suggest? Im genuinely interested.

I agree with bossy, the weather may be predicting a thaw on Wed so they have chosen this day to reopen. I think trying to open and then not (or opening late which my last school did...how is this helpful?) is more annoying than staying shut for longer. At least you know.

Perhaps staff live far away? This is annoying but not actually anyone's fault. Many teachers prefer to live out of catchment.

I agree it is a bit premature, but Presdales is at the top of a big hill isnt it, plus there are lots of pupils from rural villages so perhaps they think it isnt worth opening? Although I think the snow will have gone by tuesday.

troisgarcons · 05/02/2012 20:11

Myabe it depends on the travel of staff? Not all will live local. Or there may be some site issues caused by the bad weather?

In the last rains we flooded out ..... the lead off the roof had been stolen....similar Im sure happens all over the country .... litlle incidentals you cant predict
