to wish that when we have snow and the school is in the back of beyond, it would just shut?

dd goes to a sn school in a rural spot, it is not the local school.
due sto its situation there is a chance it will be closed tomorrow.
I have no probs with that as if the staff have trouble getting in, so will the pupils, who are all in wheelchairs and apart from boarders will have to travel in on buses.
so why can't they just say it is shut?
then we don't have to get up at the crack of dawn and have a long long day.

I'm not sure if Notfluffy is being deliberately obtuse or just stupid.

the whose school shouldn't close because one pupil can't get in. but when the entire school are in wheelchairs and rely on LEA transport schemes to get there then it is the vast majority of the pupils who can't make it.
So better for all if the decision is made earlier so that the parents can prepare themselves and the children.

I work. Being told at 8:15 that the school is closed when my son is usually collected at 8:20 is incredibly problematic. It means that i need to organise day care for him. The problem is made worse if i am on an early shift and started work at 7am. The lady that normally watches my children until they go to school and then goes to work herself is then panicking, am now panicking and lots of stress for all concerned.
If they know the night before that it is highly unlikely that it will be open it gives parents a chance to organise an alternative.

It irritates me that people assume that most children have a parent at home, or who can just leave work at the drop of a hat

ValarMorghulis Try not to be so rude please Wink

This discussion did develop somewhat to include school closures in general.

I have made it quite clear. If you rely on transport and that transport is cancelled, you can't send your kid to school. If you feel unsafe driving/can't drive don't, keep your kid at home. If getting that call part way through the day to collect/retrieve kids from bus etc is inconvenient, keep your kid at home. If, however, the school can remain open, they should, they should only close as a very last resort. One of my main reasons for this is precisely because lots of people can't lose time at work at the drop of a bit of snow, and can't afford/don't have childcare. I have no idea what the issue is?

"the school is open and she has gone"

There you go, drama over. As is so often the case in the UK, particularly the south of England, 3 inches of snow can disappear without a trace in a matter of hours. To advise of closure of schools several hours before they open isn't practical and will inevitably mean that parents are forced to take unnecessary days off work/pay for childcare.

"so why do you keep banging on about me driving?"

I clarified this already.

Can you show me where? I'm really confused about this. What part of what I said don't you like?

ValarMorghulis · 07/02/2012 11:08

the part where you did a very good impression of a bout of thrush.

Lol, funnily I still have not a fucking clue what you're talking about. Never mind. Drama over.
