To hate the snow?

cathkidstonbag · 05/02/2012 09:55

I just don't get why everyone loves it so much. Yes my kids want to play in it....for about five minutes till they come in dropping wet clothes all over the floor. And there's DH running around like a kid out in it telling me I'm a miserable b**ch for not enjoying it. When tomorrow he will walk to the main road and get in a taxi to the station for work. And if the weather is too bad to get home there he will stay in a hotel. Meanwhile I will do the whole "are the schools open or not", do I risk the roads to take them to school (remote village). I needed to get to college this week, I have exams next week that I need to do the last bit of studying for :(

Whinge over, but it's not just me is it? Am I the only one who opened the curtains this morning and wanted to cry???

YANBU I hate it. Evil white stuff!

Kladdkaka · 05/02/2012 10:01

I've had about 3ft of snow since the second week of december. It does make us happy because it reflects the low lying sunlight and makes the day brighter.

larks35 · 05/02/2012 10:01

YANBU - I'm not the biggest fan either, however here in SW we had rain overnight and it's mostly gone. Think that is going to be the case elsewhere later as well so hopefully it won't mess up your week.

TroublesomeEx · 05/02/2012 10:04

YABU. I love it!

It crunches and sparkles and coats everything.

It's magical and it's silent.

It's best at midnight and at dawn. It's beautiful.

And I LOVE IT!!

Bonkerz · 05/02/2012 10:07

Hate it too. Just makes everything harder than it needs to be. Dh was out shovelling the car out an hour before he had to leave for work which meant the kids didn't get time with him this morning. Biggest son hates the cold (ASD) so refuses to go out. Youngest DD wants to go out but I can't take her as would mean leaving oldest or dragging him out! Family car refused to start yesterday so am stranded till it can be restarted. It's all just too much!

Rindercella · 05/02/2012 10:11

YANBU. I hate it too.

Poor DD1 has been unwell for the last week or so. She is finally feeling better and we have loads on today.....I am now just hoping we're going to be able to get there.

I hate the snow. Hate it. Yes, it does make everything look very pretty. Until it turns to dirty grey slush and then it makes everything look very ugly.

Please let that rain come here from the SW soon and wash all the snow away.

CestTout · 05/02/2012 10:15

Hate it too. 5.5 hours to get from Birmingham to Cambridgeshire last night. Ironic that we went to see Snow Patrol in concert. Once home (at 4.30am) I managed to get the bloody car stuck in the road outside my house. For 30 minutes. Enough said!

Very, very happy to join any snow haters!

SausageSmuggler · 05/02/2012 10:23

No I don't really like it either. Although I am looking forward to seeing what DS makes of it later (first time he's seen it)

McHappyPants2012 · 05/02/2012 10:31

i like the snow, hate the fact it turns into slush.

molly3478 · 05/02/2012 10:33

We havent had any. The last time I remember seeing any was december 2010

ifeelloved · 05/02/2012 10:34

I love it!

Oggy · 05/02/2012 10:35

I hate the will school be open or not crap every morning so you don't know what your doing and I hate the way everyone buys up all the bread and milk like they need to stock up a nuclear bunker for a year, but apart from that I don't mind it.

deliciousdevilwoman · 05/02/2012 10:41

I love it, but not for the reasons, most do!
It gives me an excuse to indulge my inner helpless, lazy, shirker self!
It is v. heavy here.....the nearest shop is a 40 min round trip....I don't drive, and I am sure as hell not going to walk with the pram in a bleddy blizzard and 8 inches of snow!
I also secretly loved it when the trains packed up-as they inevitably do, and I had a legitimate reason to stay off work.
So for next week (obv, I'll see how the snow situation pans out) there will be no treks to the shops (did a big online shop which arrived yesterday and DH will pick up any staples before or after work) and no baby groups-I am going to hibernate with DD, cook for the freezer, watch dvds and not feel guilty.

WhenDoISleep · 05/02/2012 11:17

I hate it - last time we had snow here (Dec 10) I fell on compacted snow and broke my arm badly, so to me, snow is now not something I look forward to. TBH, I have been dreading it and now it has arrived I just want it to melt quickly and hopefully before the roads turn too icey.

littleducks · 05/02/2012 11:29

I used to find it hard when the kids were smaller. (I don't want to be smug) I bought then waterproof warm clothes in the sale last year and now it's quite simple, they have coats, waterproof hats and mittens and ski trousers. Add wellies and they can play outside for ages snug and warm and when they come back in I don't have any stress trying to dry a million things.

You haven't sympathy about the college work, I have an assignment to write but thankfully it's journal based so most resources are online so I can crack on.

littlemisssarcastic · 05/02/2012 11:31

Snow is great if you only have to venture into your own garden, until the last traces of snow/slush/ice have gone. It is great if you are very close to a warm house with enough supplies to see you through until the weather improves.
At a minimum, snow is great if you are never more than 20 minutes walking distance from a nice warm house.

Snow is rubbish if you can't freeze your life for as long as it takes to go from white fluffiness to slushy wet grey stuff, to glittering hard ice, to wet weather. So if you have to carry on as normal in the snow/ice, and that involves leaving your cozy warm home to venture out in it, it's not so great.

Added to that, I know many people who love love love snow...but all of them without exception hate hate hate it within a week or two. (Luckily we don't usually get it for more than 2 weeks in the SE in UK.)

Also, with the roads being so slippy, am I the only one who worries that a car is going to lose control on the slippy icy road and career right into me and DC?

Hulababy · 05/02/2012 11:33

YANBU

Everything grinds to a halt. You can't get anywhere. It makes the roads more dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike. You are forced to drive in unsuitable conditions to get to work.

DD doesn't really play in the snow anyway. She likes warmth, not cold and wet.

Where we live it takes ages to go, even when it goes elsewhere in the city.

And that is why I have a holiday booked for next Saturday to warmer climates - booked it yesterday just as the snow started to fall!

LetsKateWin · 05/02/2012 11:37

I love it for the first day or so. I was really excited last night when it started snowing. It looks gorgeous at night when it's falling so silently and glistening in the street lights.

DD has been talking about a snowman since December so I was excited for her.

I get paid by the day, so if travel gets disrupted I don't really love it so much.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 05/02/2012 12:00

I used to love the snow, until that night a couple of years ago when no one in the SE could get home because it came down so quickly and heavily just before rush hour. Since then it has just made me worry!

At least it has come at a weekend when most people are at home, but that won't help everyone. It's a pain in the arse. Dh works miles away and has to drive down too many country roads to get there, and the dc and I have three separate school and three separate LAs to think about when it comes to school closures.

SausageSmuggler · 05/02/2012 14:24

I need to go to the supermarket which is a 5 minute (if that) walk away but got as far as next door before realising the buggy was not going to co-oporate and turning back. Now i'm stuck at home with no chocolate or biscuits :(
