As was just watching something on T.V about children not having access to books and DP (grown man top of his field and very very intelligent) pipes up with this little gem.... Children do not need books as there is internet and that most teenagers read at least a books worth of emails and social network stuff a day Shock

Am I living with an Idiot, OK his field is programming and he reads everything online or via kindle but come on the man's being a loon right

I have seen people post in here that they have no books, sometimes as they just read from the library and other times because they read and donate.

mousymouseprice · 04/02/2012 20:39

my dc have loads of books, as do dh and I.

dribbleface · 04/02/2012 20:40

we have loads of books for our 3 year old. i found an old copy of the elves and the shoemaker today, read to him, at the end he asks 'does this book come on dvd!'

RabidEchidna · 04/02/2012 20:40

I am not saying you can not do both, I just think DP saying that a child does not need books is daft

My DD's have lots of books and i can't imagine even one day that they don't read-sometimes more sometimes less. Even though we are surrounded with all this kindle and net and etc, i still think kids need to feel the book ...My opinion....Smile

mousymouseprice · 04/02/2012 20:40

sadly my niece has only the books I gave her and her parents don't read to her Sad

MollyBroom · 04/02/2012 20:40

Nailak I agree to a point about FB and twitter. I am constantly following up articles and books from people's posts although I am not sure that teenages use social media in that way.

usualsuspect · 04/02/2012 20:40

I thought it was just competitive book owning tbh on here Grin

mrsjay · 04/02/2012 20:40

My teens said they dont fancy Kindles my eldest loves reading i offered her a kindle but she said no thanks ,

SparkySparrow · 04/02/2012 20:41

I love reading, and hopefully want to pass that on to ds. He has loads of books and gets read to everyday. I think every child should have a bookshelf full of books.
This makes me sad . :(

SparkySparrow · 04/02/2012 20:42

There is no substitute for a book!

MollyBroom · 04/02/2012 20:42

I also know people who have houses full of boos but they hardly read. Little point in shelves of dusty books that are ignored.

troisgarcons · 04/02/2012 20:42

I read the media sites online first thing in the morning but I need a paper to have with my coffee when I get to work - doesnt matter I've read the precis 3 hours beforehand.

Of a weekend, ditto, I've read online 5 hours before I have breakfast but you can't, simply have a boiled egg with out moral outrage, there, infront of you!

Ihatecbeebies · 04/02/2012 20:42

DS is 4 and has about 50 books, he did have about 100 but I had a big clear out before Christmas and gave away loads he didn't look at, but I love books and am a bit of a bookworm myself Grin

Popoozle · 04/02/2012 20:44

All three DC's have books - they range in age from 14 to 6 months (the DCs not the books).

I thought everyone had books? I really don't get the point of Kindles though - yes, they store lots of books but I only read one book at once.

mrsjay · 04/02/2012 20:44

It is true teens use social networking my dds love twitter use facebook , but they still prefer reading books espeically as children get older they get into series of book and i know DD1 loves having the collections , iyswim

MissBetsyTrotwood · 04/02/2012 20:45

To be able to choose is the best outcome, surely.

oldraver · 04/02/2012 20:46

DS has quite a few several hundred. Some are books inherited from his older brother and obviously some of them are now outgrown. I'm not very good at taking books back to the library so tend to buy instead.

yes loads.

mrsjay · 04/02/2012 20:49

lunatic im a bit funny about them using electronic devices in bed , phones Ds , as i know it can disturb sleep and over stimulate ,

MollyBroom · 04/02/2012 20:51

We have all synced our kindles together so that I can read a book at the same time as DH or one of the children and we can discuss it.

MollyBroom · 04/02/2012 20:52

The kindles don't light, they need to be read with a light, just as you would a book.

exoticfruits · 04/02/2012 20:55

He is an idiot-I have yet to meet a DC who doesn't like a story, from a book.

VickityBoo · 04/02/2012 20:55

What? How can children not have books that's absurd - dd has a load of them. New, old, charity shop, boot sales, gifts...all sorts. I'm a real bookworm though and relish it.
