To apply for this job?

I started a new job a couple of months ago. It's OK... I have realised, after going back since having a break to be a SAHM, that I'n not really cut out for this profession. It's a good job, a good work place, but I'm just not really enjoying it.

I've seen an advert for a job I'd love. The pay is much higher - we are struggling now and wouldn't.

It seems obvious to apply, but it seems much higher-level than I would have thought I could apply for, although I do tick all the boxes of experience, qualifications and skills. Most importantly, it would look terrible to apply for another job so soon into this one. If I don't get it things will be tricky for me. AIBU to apply? WWYD?

No.

I've done this.

Assume you will not get it but filling in the application will start you thinking about what you need to do to get to that job eventually. And if you get an interview, bonus.
It worked for me.

hellhasnofury · 03/02/2012 22:20

DS did this recently. Was in a job he wasn't very happy in, found a job that was better, not his ideal but better. Applied and was appointed. Fast forward four months and his dream job came up. Applied, thought nothing more of it as he'd applied for similar before but not even had an interview. This time he got and interview. Was offered the post. He's taken it. He's now going to be doing what he always thought was his 'unrealistic dream job'.

It worked for him.

Shenanagins · 03/02/2012 22:20

No reason not to. There is no reason for your current employer to know - normally they don't request a reference until they are actually wanting to offer you the job.

OopsAnotherNameChange · 03/02/2012 22:25

I'd have to take time off for interview if I were to be offered one.

Cross that bridge if and when you come to it.

letseatgrandma · 03/02/2012 22:34

What is the profession? Is the alternative job an entirely different profession-are you qualified to do it? If these things aren't an issue, then there's nothing to stop you.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 03/02/2012 22:37

Is it in the same company?

If it's not, why would anyone know that you haven't got it?

OopsAnotherNameChange · 03/02/2012 22:44

I'd rather not say what the profession is, it might be identifiable. It's not the same company but they are linked.

OP posts:
OopsAnotherNameChange · 03/02/2012 22:44

But they are entirely different, yet linked. I have experience in both fields, none in the precise role.

Just apply. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

letseatgrandma · 03/02/2012 22:55

Right, sorry-it just seemed odd that you've just decided you weren't cut out for one profession yet are qualified for a job in a different profession with much better pay?

Why will be really difficult for you if you don't get it?

aquashiv · 03/02/2012 22:57

Go for it apply why not. You will regret it if you dont.

OopsAnotherNameChange · 03/02/2012 23:00

Difficult because the management seem to make things difficult for people who want to leave. One of the reasons I'm not enjoying it too much - morale is quite low.

ShineYourButtonsWithBrasso · 03/02/2012 23:01

I would go for it, you will always have the "what if" feeling if you don't.

Shenanagins · 03/02/2012 23:14

If you have an interview then you could always phone in sick. There is always a way so go for it!

OopsAnotherNameChange · 03/02/2012 23:19

No... phoning in sick is gross misconduct, surely? What if I got the job?

NoGoodAtHousework · 03/02/2012 23:37

Book holiday-no one needs to know what you're doing.
If you get the job....give notice period required and leave old job. Most places know when they are hiring new that they will have to wait around a month (more if it's a very high up job).
Not quite sure what your scared of, if you want it go for it. What's the worst that can happen-you don't get an interview or you do and they don't want to employ you?!
You then carry on as normal and keep your ear to the ground for another job.

OopsAnotherNameChange · 04/02/2012 10:01

It's a job where I can't book holiday.

MidnightWorry · 04/02/2012 10:06

Im more worried about the fact you cant think of an excuse to have the day off personally! :) of course you should apply.

If you get an interview then you make a drs appointment on the same day for an old pain or health issue you have. (you can think of ne, a pain in your knee you had once, skin complaint, breast check, you cant sleep at the moment etc).

That way you do to the drs, as you have booked the day off for and also the interview and you have covered your back.

If you dont youl never know, i just applied for a job in Milan and another in Bahrain, dont think I can do either but hey ho.

Fireandashes · 04/02/2012 10:11

Of course YANBU. If present company needed to lose staff to cut costs, exactly how much loyalty do you think they'd show you?

TBH from what you've said about the place - cant book holiday (surely illegal?) management likely to victimise you for wanting to better yourself (definitely illegal), and overall low morale - the sooner you find something else, the better!

mysteryfairy · 04/02/2012 10:36

Don't make a doctor's appointment for an exaggerated condition. It will come up as a pre-existing condition in future checks and possibly invalidate travel and life insurance policies.

Can you only have holiday at fixed times rather than ad hoc? If so can you swap a day with someone or similar?

ComposHat · 04/02/2012 11:29

Sick day! If you don't get the job they are none the wiser and if you do, they probably won't be able to prove that you had the interview on that day. Even if they do put 2 and 2 together, what are they going to do? Fire you on your notice period?

letseatgrandma · 04/02/2012 16:43

Why can't you book holiday? Is it a teaching post?
