Ds is 3 and has been I'll with a cough for a couple of days. His temp was quite high last night but went down after calpol so I thought would get better.

Today he's been really tired, sleeping a lot and just generally lethargic. His temp has been pretty consistent at 39.5 under arm thermometer. But is not going down with regular calpol. Should I take him to a&e or am I being pfb or should I leave it and just keep an eye on him. Sorry to post here but figured there's more traffic here.

Thanks

I would advise you ring nhs direct and get their advice....its better safe than sorry!

Tiggles · 03/02/2012 21:06

Have you tried Neurofen to take his temp down - I find it way better than Calpol. You could always phone an out of hours doc or NHS direct rather than taking him to A and E where you will have to wait for hours on a Friday night anyway.

Dinosaurdrip · 03/02/2012 21:08

Thank you will try Nurofen and if that doesn't work will call NHs direct.

Do you have a 24/7 pharmacist or out of hours Drs surgery (ours is called 'grabadoc') ....TBH a pharmacist is often better better qualified than a GP.

I have to say A&E is for life or death situations, excepting Saturday nights when it's full of violent drunks.

So if you have to ask an opinion on whether your child is ill enough to go to A&E rather than dialling 999, then no, keep an eye over night.

I have always had good advice from NHS direct; 0845 4647. They will be able to advise you for the best. Hope all is ok

twange · 03/02/2012 21:11

I've also found 'Nurofen for Kids' is the one that gets a temperature down.

bettypage · 03/02/2012 21:15

My son had this last week. I alternated nurofen and calpol and still the high temp sat at 40.6. Went to GP emergency appointment and was told its a virus, carry on with what I'd been doing. She said it can last 7 to 10 days and it did go on for 9 days. It is scary but just dose him up and keep him cool if you can (hard when they are saying they're freezing and crying!!). I hope all is well soon.

Dinosaurdrip · 03/02/2012 21:47

Thank you all for the advise, have given him Nurofen now and hopefully that will help. Betty glad your ds is ok now! Really 9 days though, blimey. I can hear him moaning in the next room, poor thing. Anyway thanks again.

Let us know how he is xx

mrspnut · 03/02/2012 21:56

My dd2 aged 5 has had this for the last two days. I have been giving calpol and neurofen alternately and she perks up whilst they are working.
If your son vomits up the pain relief or he begins febrile convulsions then I'd g to a&e otherwise keep doing what you're doing.

edwinbear · 03/02/2012 21:58

Please keep a close eye on him over the next few days. DS (2.5) had a bad cough and temp (41) over Christmas that just wasn't getting better. He saw an out of hours GP and also an A&E doctor who said it was just a cold, but one Monday morning he went blue and starting shaking, I rushed him to the GP who called an ambulance to take him straight to hospital, turned out he had pneumonia.

FightsWithMonsters · 03/02/2012 22:02

Try nurofen definitely, but that is pretty high for an under the arm temperature.

Does your GP have an out of hours service? If you call them, they might have a number on the voicemail.

Dinosaurdrip · 04/02/2012 08:15

Well DS seems much better this morning, definitely not as hot and is better in himself too. If his temp rises again I will call out of hours dr but for now he is fine and actually playing with his toys for th 1st time in a couple of days.
Goodness me edwinbear What happened to you sounds very scary. I hope your DS is ok now. Thanks again everyone. Xx

Yes dizzy I found dinosaur easier to spell than tyrannosaurus. Lol. Both DS love it and is their bedtime story of choice and DS 1 calls it dinosaur drip so it stuck.

Nurofen definitely worked and both DS are making apple crumble for pudding tonight. Hate it when they're ill but at least it was over pretty quick compared to Betty's stint. Xx
