To start telling people that 'sprayed with febreeze' isn't the same as CLEAN..

Why do people think it smells good? It smells like you've sprayed chemicals all over yourself....

If you insist in dousing yourself and your clothes with it, please keep a decent distance away from me in the supermarket. don't follow me around wafting your manky unclean chemical covered clothes at me.

Serves me right for going to a different supermarket to usual I suppose.

I used to have damp clothes in the manky flat I used to live in.

I used to Febreze clothes that had been worn for 30 seconds in a smoky pub but otherwise were clean. Then tumble dry them.

echt · 03/02/2012 20:11

SuePurblybilt, I have that wet wipe/baby shit memory smell, too. When I was last in the UK I deliberately sought out whatever brand it was I used ( not available in Australia) and smelled it. Yep. 16 years later and it still works.

I should say this was part of an experiment about smell/memory I was trying to prove with my students when teaching a novel where war veterans are overcome by the smell of, say, gardenias, or hawthorn blossom, and the war comes flooding back. It was worth the trip back to the UK just to do the research.:o

BTW, OP, Febreze is very nasty indeed.

SuePurblybilt · 03/02/2012 20:13

That's very interesting echt. Smell is very evocative, I always think of Moley in Wind in the Willows, just a smell of home makes him cry

molly3478 · 03/02/2012 20:17

Liza- yeah they are dry its just my flat has a damp problem like most of the places on my estate/local area. I wash all household bedding every 4 days and my clothes every one wash as well as not owning a wardrobe and only owning a few outfits so nothing is in storage for long. I own my work uniform, 3 going out outfits, leggings, tops, 1 hoody and 1 pair of tracksut bottoms for the flat. I get through that on weekly rotation so nothing is ever around for longer than a week without wear in my drawers without being washed.

I also dry everything to fully dry in dryer with drying sheets and have damp dehumidifiers all round my house (I have 9 off the non electric, 1 plug in proper one. I then also use febreeze still smells of damp though after all that. Its a full time job!

molly3478 · 03/02/2012 20:19

Also if you have any better suggestions that dont cost 1000s of pounds would really like to hear them Hmm

podgymum · 03/02/2012 20:19

I spray my knickers every morning with it - keeps them nice and fresh all day long Grin

rogersmellyonthetelly · 03/02/2012 20:21

Sorry but I have been known to do this, after visiting stables and not having time to change my coat, I have been known to use the unpleasant smell of febreeze to drown out the considerably more unpleasant smell of horse.

troisgarcons · 03/02/2012 20:23

I use it when I've had a random teenager on my sofa all night ....

Apologies to the OP but rather a kid kept warm and safe - cant afford a full furniture steam clean by professionals

Get over yourself OP. Oh, and get back to your up-market supermarket sniggers @ the hoi poloi doing their own shopping, in a supermarket nonetheless

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 03/02/2012 20:26

molly get de-humidifer eggs like these dehumidifier eggs

We live in a very old and damp house and they are utterly brilliant and after you've bought them no running costs.

Podgy - were you in Morrisons today? Grin

Can I mention again that my point is febreeze isn't 'clean' so people commenting that they do it on coats clearly knowing it's not cleaning it aren't the people I mean..

OP posts:
alistron1 · 03/02/2012 20:27

I don't even know what febreeze smells like tbh. Think op was trying to start a stealth asda customer bashing thread, I give you

"Serves me right for going to a different supermarket to usual I suppose."

echt · 03/02/2012 20:27

molly3478 if you google make your own fabric freshener, you'll get lots of recipes, some involving vodka:o, which should answer your needs.

Unfortunately most involve the use of fabric conditioner, and I haven't come across a tolerable one in Australia, and now use white vinegar in the wash instead. Works just as well, and you don't smell like a chip shop.

Some of recipes use essential oils, so you could end up with quite a nice pong.

sotilltomorrow · 03/02/2012 20:27

Yes, do start telling people, hopefully some of them will floor you for your ignorance.

Ariel with febreze... go google & educate yourself!

Other reasons for you to denigrate people who use Morrisons?

usualsuspect · 03/02/2012 20:28

I'd rather smell febreze than the horsey smell of the Waitrose shoppers tbh

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 03/02/2012 20:29

troigarcons seriously the picture you're attempting to paint couldn't be further from me. Nice comeback though Hmm

Good work on looking after random teens, genuinely I respect that.

molly3478 · 03/02/2012 20:31

I said I have 9 things like themand they are industrial strength ones my husband gets from his work, as well as an electric dehumidifier I try to run most days when I have enough electric as well as minature little ones that go in all drawers I have 14 of them in all cupboards and drawers. All together All together it takes a few pints out a week but its still not enough. I cant afford any more it was only on discount I could get them and I have to keep replacing them so quick.

I also have windows on vent even in middle of winter and hardly ever use my heating. I never dry clothes not in dryer. I have threw out all excess towels and material and wash them and fully dry them after every use. I still have lots of damp though

GnomeDePlume · 03/02/2012 20:35

cant use febreeze here. DD suffered with terrible travel sickness and now associates the smell of febreeze with being horridly sick!

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 03/02/2012 20:35

Molly damp is grim - you have my sympathy and gets everywhere, we really do have a nightmare, had tried lots of things but those eggs have been an absolute godsend, particularly in one cupboard that the smell got everywhere. Might be worth a try if you haven't used that type which you dry out in the oven whenever you have it on.

OP posts:
pluckingupcourage · 03/02/2012 20:38

I'm sure febreze has its place but I've recently realised that certain ebayers I've had the misfortune to deal with are using it on clothes allegedly "new without tags".

Boak.

troisgarcons · 03/02/2012 20:39

Frankly - febreeze is a godsend when you have corpse teenagers stinking the place out - and Im a wide open window freak - even I draw the line this week .........

JumpJockey · 03/02/2012 20:41

One of the rowers I used to coach had one bit of 'impressive' kit from a prestigious crew. He would wear it every day for a week (getting nice and sweaty/ damp with river water) and febreze it after each outing.

molly3478 · 03/02/2012 20:41

I think I use febreeze a lot becuse I am paranoid. When we went to inlaws I could smell the damp on the stuff in our suitcase. I cant smell it at home but thats because smokers cant smell themselves in their own home but that doesnt mean they dont smell.

We have painted DDs bedroom 4 times in 18 months to cover it but one wall in her room in particular is constantly soaking. baby DD is going to be born and in their in 8 weeks to. I prefer to stink of chemical febreeze than have people judge me as a tramp but they probably do anyone but not a lot I can really do about it.

maybenow · 03/02/2012 20:41

i thought the whole point of febreeze was it was an 'odour neutraliser' rather than a smell in it's own right? Confused

like neutradol.. or carbon/charcoal... ???

Oh, I hate febreeze.

I volunteered in an Oxfam shop ages ago when I couldn't get a job and the manager insisted we go to the basement (no ventilation) and spray every single piece of clothing with febreeze before steaming it to get the creases out. He claimed the steam machine would disperse the fumes so we wouldn't mind it.

He never actually lied to customers if they asked outright if the clothes had been washed but, if they assumed the clothes were clean he just went along with it.

Foul foul foul!
