It was -2 here today. What would you expect Year 3 & 4 to be wearing in their 1.5 hour outdoor PE lesson?

Just curious. Not icy or physically dangerous, so sport not cancelled. But ds2 came out in tears as he was so cold. Apparently that's ok though as he was given the chance to go in (which apparently he didn't hear....).

marriedinwhite - I agree with you. I remember shivering with cold (while the PE teachers wore far warmer clothes) and bullying PE teachers. And, like you, the experience put me off organised sport for life.

Firawla · 02/02/2012 20:22

they should have warm joggers and jumper or warm tracksuit, with hat and gloves optional. keeping them out in shorts and t shirt is ridiculous!! especially for such a long time.

strictlovingmum · 02/02/2012 20:32

Thermal underwear under tracksuit, thicker socks, gloves, that was all for todays PE, one hour outside.
Didn't do her any harm, she didn't complain, she was happy when I picked her up.

jamdonut · 02/02/2012 20:52

We expect joggers/trackies and, at the very least, a sweatshirt, and a change of footwear,(because it is muddy!) for outdoor games.

I would expect

Tracksuit bottoms
Trainers
Tshirt
Sports jumper or hoody
Coat
Hat
Gloves

lins2 · 02/02/2012 21:06

I've been on another thread about sadistic sports teachers...and hey here's another one!
They're monsters.

Surely better to have the children in sports top, tracksuit (top and bottoms) , hat and gloves. They can always take them off if they get hot. Are sports teachers really this thick?
Difficult if the parents don't cooperate - my mum was a teacher and she had a stash of our clothes that she kept in her class for those whose parents couldn't / wouldn't. She hated inequality and that has stayed with me.
Or, take the lost property box outside and pile it on the kids...have some fun with them for goodness sake.

marriedinwhite · 02/02/2012 21:08

arghmyear I agree.

I would expect all of that - for the children as well as the teacher!

CMOTDibbler · 02/02/2012 21:14

DS was out in shorts, long socks, rugby shirt and thermal baselayer. He had apparently been warm enough. They do outdoor sport in all weather, hence the uniform baselayer.

mrsjay · 02/02/2012 21:19

I would send him with a tracksuit or jogging bottoms and a hat

dementedma · 02/02/2012 21:22

sheesh, this thread is unbelievable..
I suggest you send them out wrapped in cottonwool from head to toe in case nasty Jack Frost nips their delicate peach blossom skin
hats? Coats? Gloves?
for P.E.?

foreverondiet · 02/02/2012 21:22

I'd expect them to be inside!

The DC both have trackie trousers and sweatshirts in pe bag, we get told of if they don't have, and DD keeps her tights on underneath.

Unfortunately many teachers (and possibly parents) still do not understand that leaving children out in the cold actually can do harm. If a child is fighting an infection and is left out in the cold, the body will prioritise heating itself up over fighting the infection and the child is therefore much more likely to become ill. All this could easily be prevented with proper dressing but many PE teachers do not seem to allow kids to wear coats/hats/scarves. Also, it is not true that the kids are active all the time, there is a lot of hanging around, waiting for instruction, waiting for their turn. Often they have to sit on the ground. I have seen this not just at our school but many other schools as well. Crazy if you ask me.

dementedma · 02/02/2012 21:32

no problem with trackies/hoodies, but coats/hats/scarves?Shock
Oh puhlease. What the hell are your DCs made of? How can they exercise wearing all that crap?

arghmyear · 02/02/2012 21:33

Totally agree with dikkertjedap. Exactly what happened to my ds last year at school.

SecretMinceRinser · 02/02/2012 21:35

I used to have to wear gym knickers and a short sleeved pe top too. In all weathers.
A tracksuit is nice and unrestrictive I think. With a t-shirt underneath so you can remove the top if you want when you've warmed up a bit.
Not sure about gloves though - depends what sport you were doing but without grips they'd be no good for netball/hockey.

ElphabaisWicked · 02/02/2012 21:43

They layer up at the dc's school.

They either wear a t-shirt, polo shirt or rugby shirt (or rugby short over the top of polo shirt, then the school PE hoody. They have jogging bottoms with either white ankle socks or long rugby socks. However they have shorts for summer and if a child chooses to wear them they can (dd did last winter as she didn't want to confess she had lost her joggers until the teacher expressed her concern to me)

TimeForCake · 02/02/2012 21:49

I was amazed at lunch play today to look out to the playground & see so many kids choosing not to put their coats on. I know many run around but even so, it was freezing! They are more hardy than me!

LiegeAndLief · 02/02/2012 21:56

Rhubarbgarden, I'm another one who was forced to play hockey (I say play, hand-eye coordination not really my strong point so I was mainly trying to avoid the ball) in gym knickers and very short skirt in horizontal sleet. I can still remember the horrible purply blotchy colour my legs used to go. I was left with an abiding horror of hockey and exercise in general.

Poor kids.

TheSmallClanger · 02/02/2012 22:12

I remember my mum complaining to my primary school about my purple legs and chilblains from doing outdoor PE in winter. This was the early 80s, so allegedly, we were made of sterner stuff.

I don't think it benefits anyone in particular to do outdoor PE with primary kids in this weather. Far easier to have a big game of something in the hall, and they get more activity in as they aren't fannying around with jumpers/moving to and from field/complaining.

sunnydelight · 03/02/2012 03:15

Y3 DD wore her full track suit for sport today as it's unseasonably cold, it's 18 Blush
