DD has woken up this morning. Appears absolutely fine. Acting normally etc.,

But she appears to have a 'soft spot' on her skull. It doesn't feel like a bruise and doesn't appear to hurt her. It just feels like that 'soft spot' you feel on newborns

I don't know what to do: Drs this morning / urgent care now? or am I utterly overreacting and is it her head growing.

She's 2.

Ive no idea I'm afraid, but I do want to rush in & wake my 2 year old & pome her head. But as she was awake for a nappy change at 5.45 & I'm not mad I'll leave her.

I take it you've googled?

missnevermind · 02/02/2012 07:14

Phone NHS direct as you are worried.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 02/02/2012 07:26

Where is it?

boeing · 02/02/2012 07:27

I have called NHS direct. Waiting for call back.

I will call GP at 8am when they open.

It is above her left ear.

Hope everything is ok

PoultryInMotion · 02/02/2012 08:23

A&E, please.

Soft spot is a sign of skull fracture. Hopefully it's nothing like that but it needs to be seen x

DeWe · 02/02/2012 08:46

Don't they have a soft spot each side too? It may just be it hasn't closed?

PeneloPeePitstop · 02/02/2012 08:48

Please don't panic. It could upset your DD. But this does have to be checked immediately.

I am sure it is fairly normal for the fontanel to not close properly until a child is about 2 year old. It will still feel soft at that stage, and in some children it is much later than 2.

Hopefully that is all it is, and the hospital can reassure you. :)

squeakytoy · 02/02/2012 09:11

sorry, missed the bit about it being by the left ear...

I think that is the shape of the skull though.. I have an indent just behind my left ear, that feels more of a dent than on the right side.. it has always been like that..

Ellefabulosa · 02/02/2012 10:51

I had this - turns out it was just where I kept resting my glasses. As she is two her bones are likely still very soft. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about but get it checked.

mojitomania · 02/02/2012 11:12

It's normal for the fontanel not to be closed yet.

boeing · 02/02/2012 15:34

Thankyou all for your kind and helpful messages.

We went to the GP who couldn't explain it so went to Paed. emergencies at the local (large) hospital. Several physical exams... still no explanation so ultrasound scan (made a right mess of her hair!) was done which showed nothing untoward. THANKGOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It appears it's most likely an 'old' wound healing itself. Will def. be keeping an eye on it and will go back if it's still there in a few days, but doesn't appear to be anything (i) serious (ii) sinister

I can't remember having any head injuries for months, but the sonographer appeared very relaxed and thorough - she looked at different parts of her skull and also different parts of her body (knee, hand) to check what her 'normal' bone structure was like.

Still feeling a bit shaky - I think, even with a good outcome, things like this just show you how fragile our lives are. I have been sweating about a lot of small stuff recently and this has really put it all into perspective.

Extra cuddles all round tonight

My son had exactly this.
Soft squidgy patch behind his right ear.
He had lots of examinations and scans which showed nothing.
Blood tests showed he had a phosphate deficiency. Phosphate is needed with calcium to form and strengthen bones.
He was prescribed phosphate and the patch hardened in about a week.
Has he had blood tests?
