Do YOU earn over 40K? What do you do?

Obviously only for those of you comfortable with disclosing what you earn.

In another thread I could see a lot of posters saying it's no biggie earning over 40K, however this is just under me and my husband's JOINT income so it does feel like a very distant wage for us.

So, if you earn 40K, what do you o for a living? How many year's experience have you got and what is your education level?

And I do mean to pry.

I run a contact centre for a well known telecoms company and earn about £60K. Have 15 years experience in the field and educated to BA Hons (R Group). DH earns similar. Get pretty good value for wage in NE England.
It's a job I kind of applied for and stayed there on a grad programme. I enjoy it but it's not 'fulfilling' if that makes sense - I would have loved to be a doctor or nurse but not good enough at science.

I used to working as a PA in a City law firm. Main qualifications were Secretarial College exams. Started working at 17 in a typing pool earning £8k and worked my way up to when i left after my mat leave ended. Now work for myself when DA is asleep and will probably earn about £8k again. But I get to be with my DS so it's worth it. Smile

Before leaving the UK I earnt around 38k plus an average annual bonus of circa 15 - 20k as a PA in an investment bank. Three A levels and some secretarial qualifications - 10 years experience. Now in Dubai I earn about 12k as a part time nursery teacher. DH is a chartered surveyor working on projects all over the middle east and north Africa, earns about 70k (tax free) with a tied house, a car and other benefits. We know the two people who took on our old jobs in London (2008) - they were both made redundant so we feel incredibly fortunate.

I work as a project manager in the south east (not London)and earn £55k. I have a BSc in an unrelated subject from a 'good' university and 10 years experience, 5 of those in project management.

DP in 6 figure bracket running large IT function in financial services.

Another one here recommending a careerin IT.

Dh earns just over (wish it was under as it's the cut off for many things). Hons degree, + 7 yrs post grad qualification (while earning £15k) now 6yrs post qualified experience and considering MBA for next wage level. Not funded we'd have to find the money which feels near impossible at the moment.

I could be if working full time, only work 5-6hrs a week, self employed. Hons degree, MA, 15yrs work experience and 4 yrs specialising, numerous post grad qualifications. Hours of voluntary work. Stay at home to ease to child care costs. Paid for it by damn hard work in call centres, shops, bar work and many sleepless nights studying during maternity leave. I honestly don't know how I did it but I did.

kalidasa · 05/08/2012 08:09

I am at about £41K. I am a lecturer in London. I have been a lecturer for three years, with a research fellowship before that. I am educated to PhD level (as you have to be for the job). I am 32.

sassytheFIRST · 05/08/2012 08:19

Would if I were FT.
English teacher with extra responsibilities, big comp, 17yrs experience.

freerangelady · 05/08/2012 08:26

Run my own business educated to degree level ( r group) althought the subject had nothing to do with anything!!

QueenofPlaids · 05/08/2012 08:30

Yes - quite a bit more depending on bonuses. I'm an in house project / programme manager in financial services. Reached the 40k mark with 5yrs experience. MA from Russell group university (not necessary but probably managed to move up more quickly as a result).

I could earn significantly more in a different institution or PM consultancy, so in that context I don't feel particularly well paid for my role. Hours can be long, but I've proven myself so can take advantage of flex working, home working as long as the job gets done which is making me too lazy to seek better pay elsewhere

DP earns almost exactly 40k. He has a few years more experience & a slightly higher degree. He is an engineer in high tech but doesn't put in the bloody hours I do

We are not in London our the South East.

Arabellasmella · 05/08/2012 09:01

No, we don't earn that between us. I'm an academic librarian with 15 years experience and my husband works in sales, he gets about £25k and I get whatever 0.4 of 30k is, as only work 2 days a week. I am depressed about my lack of opportunities if we stay in our current town, and if I want to be part time while the kids are little. Feel very trapped at the moment. I am encouraged to see so many people doing so well on here though!

NotAnArtist · 05/08/2012 10:48

Yes, with my bonuses I get around 40k, I'm a nanny in SW London.
I have a Diploma (which not one employer has cared about/asked to see) nursery experience, six years nanny experience and some really fucking good references!
I am, however, on about as much as I can possibly earn now, unless I go to Dubai or something, which I don't really want to do.

moveoverhogger · 05/08/2012 11:28

Yes, I am a retail manager & earn £40k basic, plus bonuses. Have worked my way up from the bottom when I started as a college leaver at 17. Have been there 13 years now. Have no professional qualifications whatsoever.
