Saw this topic on another thread so thought I ask here

Apparently Electronic Cigarettes have no health implications and I am told are even sold in Chemists, so would you let your children use one?

OK so they contain nicotine but so do potatoes, tomatoes and peppers

why would a child need one?

thepeoplesprincess · 28/01/2012 21:50

Nicotine isn't great though. I wouldn't want anyone to become addicted to the stuff, whether it's by smoking or not. It's not psychologically healthy.

PS: has anyone tried the electronic cigarettes? Are the smoke-flavoured ones any good?

SixFeetUnder · 28/01/2012 21:51

As far as I was aware they are an alternative to smoking cigarettes/an aid to giving up smoking completely. Nicotine patches and gum are also sold in chemists, I wouldn't let my children use those. Bit confused as to what your point is?

wherearemysocks · 28/01/2012 21:52

There are actually sold in my local newsagents too. My eldest is only 7 so have not even considered whetner I would let my children use them.

My my dh smokes though, and is wanting/trying unsuccesfully atm to give up so I would much prefer he smoked these instead. Especially as someone we know very recently died from throat cancer and was only a few years older that dh is.

Also had no idea those things had nicotine in them.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 28/01/2012 21:54

What a stupid question. Who would want their child addicted to anything? Addiction is shit.

As an alternative to actual fags for the chronically hooked though, they have to be better.

I've got some on order Smile

gamerwidow · 28/01/2012 21:54

agree with SixFeetUnder and unless electronic cigarettes become "cooler" than real cigarettes (unlikely) children won't be interested.

TheArmadillo · 28/01/2012 21:54

I had the boots own brand one - found it much better than the nicotine patches. Rarely used it but it was the puffing/fiddling that I struggled with.

I don't see why kids would want to buy one Confused cigarettes are cool, crappy looking plastic extremely fake cigarette replacements not so much.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 28/01/2012 21:56

Why would you give one to a child?

I have tried one. I was impressed that you could blow smoke out, but they are very heavy compared to holding a cigarette so it was wierd.

Is there really nicotine in tomatoes and peppers and potatoes? Shock how come those things aren't addictive then?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 28/01/2012 21:57

It must be tiny amounts in those other things as they are not addictive except chips

LowRegNumber · 28/01/2012 21:57

NRpatches are sold in chemists too, does your q apply to them too? Or condoms... Or countless other things that chemists stock that are not for children Confused

What is your real point/question?

thepeoplesprincess · 28/01/2012 21:58

Ooooh kitchenroll do you really blow smoke out? Is it like a proper; fag? Also, does it taste like smoke?

JStreet · 28/01/2012 22:02

They are supposed to harmless, have no effect on health.

Peoples Princess
I have one as I'm trying to give up and it's great, the one I have you can buy different flavoured vaporisers for it. I smoke menthol so I get the menthol tips. Agree with kitchenroll that they are heavy compared to cigs though. But def helps to overcome cravings HTH

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 28/01/2012 22:04

They do make you blow out smoke but they don't taste the same, although I suppose that might depend on what cigarettes you smoke. Didn't taste like my Marlboro lights, but didn't taste bad.

They are very clever, I would suggest any smoker give it a go!

Mists · 28/01/2012 22:11

I bought one in Tesco. Love the smoke effect! When I looked on the website they were not recommended as a stop smoking aid though. Why? Is the dose too heavy?

Anyway. Is this about formula milk which is also sold in chemists?

alistron1 · 28/01/2012 22:14

Dp has gone from being a heavy rollie smoker to pretty much smoke free with ecigs. As nrt they are fab.

alistron1 · 28/01/2012 22:16

Ps the smoke is a vapour... same as in nebulisers.

Mists · 28/01/2012 22:17

That sounded mad, sorry. I did say it was a wild guess, but it was the bit about children which confused me and you know how threads about threads which are actually analogies happen here a lot and I am not quite sober

Ignore me Grin

LowRegNumber · 28/01/2012 22:18

Which paper do you work for?

WhereMyMilk · 28/01/2012 22:21

Do tomatoes really contain nicotine! Crumbs may explain DD's need to eat a pun net a day
