DD1 age 3 HATES taking medicine-including calpol. I have 2 DS who might have a moan but take it ok.
She had bad chest infection at Xmas and had Amoxicillin-yellow sort of hint of banana flavour. Was a real struggle to get her to finish it but managed. We've tried all variety of coaxing/bribing/giving sweets/mixing in juice/jam/freezing in a lollipop etc
Now she has tonsillitis and has penicillin-4 TIMES A DAY......and there is NO hint of any flavour!
So, why can't they make it taste better???? I would rather my kids have a bit of sugar/flavouring mixed with it for when antibiotics are needed, rather than go through the stress-her and us!

ooh, i love the banana-y amoxicillin - yum.
dd1 always ends up with trimethoprim for UTIs, which is all liquorishy and revolting. we have to resort to jelly tots to take the taste away.

Kladdkaka · 27/01/2012 14:45

Make medicine more appealing to children Hmm? Considering that I used to feign headaches to con junior disprol tablets out of my babysitters (I knew where they were carefully hidden out of my reach) because they tasted nice, I think best not.

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 27/01/2012 14:46

If it tasted too good there is a danger that the children would get their hands on it and drink it all and possibly making up ailments so they can have more.
It is flavoured to make it more palatable but they don't want medicine to taste like sweeties.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 27/01/2012 14:46

Charlotte - what's wrong with you?! Bananay amoxycillin is gross.

Dd just had trimetjroprim and liked it. Usually she vomits all medicine straight back in your face literally.

I don't know why they can't make it a better consistency too, why is it always all gloopy and horrible?

The worst ever is clarithromycin - ds had it for pneumonia and for an ear infection, he was very brave but it is disgusting.

You could try asking your pharmacy if they do different flavours? You'd need another prescription though...

Kladdkaka

Orange flavoured junior asprin were good too - I used to nick them.

jennys79 · 28/01/2012 06:31

You ought to try giving a 2 year old steroid tablets, dissolved water. They are truly foul. Especially if the child doesn't like juice, so you can't 'hide' the taste.

jennys79 · 28/01/2012 06:32

oops, disolved in water.

MrsSleepy · 28/01/2012 07:07

I agree with Jennys79 on the steroids, My DS (4) has just finished another course and tries his hardest not to gag/throw up everytime.

Sirzy · 28/01/2012 07:12

Steroids get mixed in blackcurrant juice. Ds never drinks it normally but after so many courses of them it is the only way to get them into him. I did warn the a and e nurse that she would end up wearing it if she didn't use blackcurrant......... She should have listened Grin

minimisschief · 28/01/2012 08:58

oh please as an adult i cant get into half the medicines let alone a child. children arent going to start overdosing on medicines because they taste nice.

besides you should have them somewhere a child cannot reach them. And faking illness really? Again your an adult and are in control of what you give them.

Grumpla · 28/01/2012 09:04

I dissolve steroids in a few drops of water then mix that into a petit filous! Works every time Grin

manticlimactic · 28/01/2012 09:05

I remember going to the docs with a really bad throat infection and asking for the bananary stuff as I could not think of the possibility of swallowing tablets as my throat was that sore. He gave me some Grin

My DD hated any medicines. Used to cry at the sight of the bottle. I used to give her a jelly baby after taking it.

GypsyMoth · 28/01/2012 09:06

Well if my generation could cope with 'benylin' I think the little treasures of today can cope with what's available today...... Nobody has a duty to design and make gourmet medicine!!

Just tell your kids they have to have it. No pandering to them, get on with it.

inmysparetime · 28/01/2012 09:10

Medicines do have huge amounts of sugar, sweeteners and colourings to make them more appealing to kids. As they are not "foods" they can put in all sorts of additives usually banned by FSA.
Try syringing it into the back of the mouth so they can't taste it so much.

Finallyfinally · 28/01/2012 09:14

It's MOULD. You can't polish a turd...

Lueji · 28/01/2012 09:17

My DS loved the steroids...

Always surprised the nurses.

TwoPinkShoes · 28/01/2012 09:25

No pandering here! All children take it properly when it's been prescribed - I'm not going to barter, beg or persuade - it's there to make them better and that's it! Some taste nice, some don't. I will sympathise verbally when it's a nasty tasting one, but it's all over quickly.

Dd1 had to take a foul medicine for about a year when she was little - it really was grim. But it made her better and avoided an operation Smile .

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 28/01/2012 17:53

Yes but unfortunately it isn't so easy to be tough on a 16 month old who vomits when she has a taste she doesn't like...

stargirl1701 · 28/01/2012 18:04

I loved the banana antibiotic. Wish they prescribed it for adults...

Sirzy · 28/01/2012 18:41

Leftmymistletoe - give chocolate straight after then.

I tend to agree with twopinkshoes generally. Medicines aren't designed to taste nice they are designed to make them better, I have no qualms about pinning DS down to get medicine into him much better than the alternative.

Meglet · 28/01/2012 18:44

Have you tasted the banana medicine these days. It's foul, nothing like when I was a kid. I think they've taken all the sugar and additives out. The DC's can't stand it.

spamm · 28/01/2012 18:50

We pine for banana flavoured antibiotics. When we moved to the US, I tried to get something like that for ds when he was ill, but all kids stuff is either grape (bleeuuuugghhh!) or bubblegum flavour.

There is only 1 toothpaste he will use, as he hates mint, grape or bubblegum so he has watermelon.

But the ABs are vile. I am sort of in the school of "medecine should taste bad" but I still felt for him the first time he was given grape ABs. I now beg the pharmacy for strawberry, but they do not always have it
