to think my baby's cough will just go on its own?

my baby (4 months) has a chesty cough (day 2) - is leaving an ounce or two of milk at each feed but seems happy enough and is still smiling etc

Should I give Calpol? Or just leave well alone and wait until it goes?

I don't have strong views either way re medication but don't want to give baby medicine if this is something that will go of its own accord?

Sorry ... new to this!

leave her unless she develops a temperature or starts refusing feeds

if is seems well in herself lay off the calpol as it is for pain relief or fever and will make no difference to a cough

how sensible do you sound? lots of people would have been at the GPs first thing this morning

hope the cough goes soon

Calpol will only help if your baby has a temperature or is in pain. If he seems quite happy, tehn IMO opinion there is little point in giving Calpol. If the cough carries on you might need to check with the GP that there isn't a chest infection.

If he's looking OK, not distressed, overheating or appearing to be in pain, then leave alone and offer extra drinks of warm water. Help his bronchial tubes by steam sessions i.e. run the hot taps or the shower and sit with him in the bathroom for a while. If he looks like it's hurting or he's running a temperature, see if a shot of Calpol helps. If the Calpol doesn't help and it isn't getting better, see your GP.

Agree, calpol will only help if there is a high temperature, so I wouldn't bother with it for now.

I used to do steam sessions in the bathroom by having the hot shower on full, but I'm sure I've read on here that there was a reason not to use steam. It might have just been that there is a risk of scalding, but that wouldn't apply to just sitting in a bathroom with the shower on. Maybe someone that knows more than me can help with that.

I think you sound like you have the right idea, you feel like it will go on its own and it probably will. Listen to your instincts.

Calpol doesn't just help if there is a temperature.
