To spend £800+ on DS's Christening party?

We have invited 40 guests; a mixture of family and close friends. In total, for food and drink, room hire, cake and decorations we are looking at spending in excess of £800. It sounds a bit much to me, although we do live in London if that makes a difference. Does this sound OTT? Anyone out there spent more than this?

It's £800 more than we spent. But if it's important to you and within your budget, go for it.

DamnBamboo · 26/01/2012 13:52

Do what you like.

I'm having a 50th for my husband and I'm spending more than that.

pinkhebe · 26/01/2012 13:53

I'm sure my Neices christenings were probably more than that! If you've got the money do it

Can you afford it? If so, thenfine. If not, then not fine.

2cats2many · 26/01/2012 13:53

We spent more than that, but that's because we had more people. Christenings a reasonably big deal in my family.

dollywashers · 26/01/2012 13:54

We spent £600 (not in London) but had a joint christening with my brother's little one. So only £300 then my Mum and Dad chipped in too. We had 100+ guests though.

It's your money. Do what makes you happy.

DilysPrice · 26/01/2012 13:55

It is a lot of money, but you'd have to try hard to manage professional food and booze and room hire at a London venue for much less than 20 quid a head.
Can you afford it? Are you capable of doing self-catering sandwiches in a local scout hut and doing a booze cruise to Calais? (probably not, I assume it's all booked now)

SmashCake · 26/01/2012 13:55

Thanks DamnBamboo that's what I needed to hear. It's more than we spent on our wedding! I was just starting to wonder if it's got out of hand, but I feel better now.

If you can afford it and it's how you choose to spend your money, it's totally up to you.
Have a nice party.

AnneReid110 · 12/07/2012 12:04

People spend a lot of money of frivolous things and I'm sure you could turn around to anybody who's being critical of you and point out something they spent a lot of money on where you wouldn't

I saw this helpful guide when planning my little one's christening.

bragmatic · 12/07/2012 12:07

God will love you for it.

IslaValargeone · 12/07/2012 12:09

Fwiw, it sounds OTT to me, but if you can afford it, then who am I to say what you should spend your money on?

squeakytoy · 12/07/2012 12:11

Upto you really isnt it. It is a party that your daughter will not know about or remember, but it is your choice if you have that sort of money to waste.

Personally I think it sounds OTT.

alphabite · 12/07/2012 12:11

If you are feeling guilty spent £700 and give $100 to charity.

Viviennemary · 12/07/2012 12:11

Personally I wouldn't spend that much money on a christening even if I did have plenty of money. But if you want to then it's up to you.

Tee2072 · 12/07/2012 12:14

I have a feeling the Christening is long over...

IslaValargeone · 12/07/2012 12:16

Ah yes :o

IslaValargeone · 12/07/2012 12:16

How the feck do old threads like this get bumped Confused

Mintyy · 12/07/2012 12:18

This thread was started in January and bumped by someone advertising an online christening party guide.

Never ever ceases to AMAZE me that people don't read the thread.

IslaValargeone · 12/07/2012 12:29

I very rarely read the dates? I don't think that's amazing.
