to think that Sainsbury's home delivery use a ridiculous number of plastic carrier bags?

Maybe a trivial thing to post about on AIBU, but trying to communicate this to Sainsbo's themselves is like shouting into the ether.

I'm busy at the moment, and had a free delivery code, so thought I'd save myself the trip. They've sent the shopping I would normally get into 3 bags for life into 13 carrier bags, some containing just one item each. Some of the stuff that I'd normally get into my 3 reusable bags (4 x 4pt milk cartons, for example)thankfully wasn't even in bags.

AIBU to think that this stupid waste negates any gains the Welsh Assembly make by imposing a charge on all plastic bags? Do Sainsbury's have this policy in Wales?

all delivery companies seem to do this. At least ocado and sainsburys will take back any bags you want them too - we just unpack as the stuff is brought in, and hand the bags back.

TartyMcFarty · 25/01/2012 17:07

Seems impossible to do that at the speed they're chucking stuff in. I gave back 6 or 7 but wasn't quick enough with the rest.

Waitrose do the same. Annoys me too. They do collect following week to recycle, but they don't need to use 15 bags for what I would get into 4, so shouldn't have to bloody recycle them. Yes, what a waste, YANBU.

2kidsintow · 25/01/2012 17:51

They don't do it here (Wales) as you have to pay 5p per bag.

slartybartfast · 25/01/2012 17:52

cant you use them as bin liners?

SomekindofSpanish · 25/01/2012 17:59

I agree. Received my order about a hour ago and one bag had just a cucumber in it Hmm.

Saying that, I have just switched from Tesco and it was the same.

Both Tesco and Sanisburys have asked me if I have any carrier bags I want to return. I return some and keep some for bin liners.

slartybartfast · 25/01/2012 18:33

you can have deliveries from tesco without bags

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 25/01/2012 18:36

They will wait for you to empty the bags, or at least our guy does. What more can you ask for?

diabolo · 25/01/2012 18:54

You actually get carrier bags??????

Often, at least half my delivery is loose in the bottom of one of the big plastic tubs they bring to the door and I have to decant it, item by item.

On a slightly off-point matter - I once ordered some "Ready to Roast Winter Veg for 2 " and as a substitute got....................a gigantic Shepherds Pie (serves 6).

Wtf?

Rhubarbgarden · 25/01/2012 19:09

YANBU. In fact I was going to post exactly the same AIBU about Ocado, after my delivery today included three bags containing single items. What is the earthly point in me going around with a folded hessian bag so I can always decline plastic bags when I'm in shops, for my supermarket to behave so frivolously with plastic bags for my groceries? Angry

Ouroboros · 25/01/2012 19:14

I get annoyed by it too, but do ask for bags as we live up two flights of stairs and it would take ages if we didn't have them. But, I take them to the local charity shop who always need spare carrier bags so at least they don't go to waste.

TartyMcFarty · 25/01/2012 20:34

They should be taking them back for reusing, not recycling - they've not even held any weight!

YANBU.

I've been meaning to write to them and have a moan about it. I don't get home deliveries very often but I still have bags rustling about from the last one Hmm.

I do re-cycle my surplus plastic bags though.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 25/01/2012 20:46

The shopping is done by a few different people, there isn't one person walking round with a shopping trolley and your shopping personal list printed out. It's also shopped in zones so your lone cucumber won't be in with your tins of soup!

MoreBeta · 25/01/2012 20:51

In our area I wish Sainsbury would use more carrier bags. There is the odd single bagged item but many of the items come just stacked in the box without being bagged at all. I end up carrying armfuls of products straight off the back of the truck into our house.

I do like Sainsbury delivery service but the packers need better instructions as it does hold up the drivers sometimes with so many unpacked items.

I do give them back the bags for recycling.

DaPrincessBride · 25/01/2012 20:56

YANBU we also have this all the time. I can't unpack quickly enough as they shove it through the door and scarper! I think it's Asda who give you the option to have a bag-free delivery?

TartyMcFarty · 25/01/2012 21:26

It might be an idea to use a deposit system for the crates the stuff is delivered in - I'm sure there's one that has left crates with us before, but that might have been because they were running behind schedule!

manticlimactic · 25/01/2012 22:53

Tesco have the option where you can choose to have a delivery with no bags too.

schmalex · 26/01/2012 16:48

YANBU. Although they do take them back for recycling.
My Sainsbury's delivery last week had a single bulb of garlic in its own bag!
