To not see the attraction of "Spa days"??

I'm writing about "Luxury Spa" days at the moment...descriptions of what you get for your money. I simply can't see why people ooh and ahh about them.

For £100 or more you get to use the pool at some hotel...you also get a go of their gym (not my idea of relaxation) and if you're lucky, you get a "mini facial" or "Mini Mani/Pedi" and a tiny salad one cheese sarnie light lunch plus glass of piddle wine.

Why are these days so popular? What do you do once you've had your facial? Go for a swim? Why not just do that in your local pool for three quid? You could book a non mini facial in your local salon for 40 quid!

Am I missing something?

Eew! I suppose they do coral!

coraltoes · 25/01/2012 14:31

Relaxing! Hmm catch up with your friend in a bubbly pool of piss. Lovely.

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 25/01/2012 14:32

Haha, *coral", great post!

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 25/01/2012 14:32

I was meaning the one about the hospital but the pool of piss one has just made me chuckle too!

naturalbaby · 25/01/2012 14:32

I don't understand how they work out the price. I used to go to a fairly posh gym that (now) costs £50 a month. It could be one of those spa places - gym, nice pool, sauna/steam room/jacuzzi area, whale music, loungers, treatment rooms. I refuse to pay the guest fee of £15 a day even though it is a lovely relaxing place to be and has fantastic facilities.

coraltoes · 25/01/2012 14:34

Why thank you hexagonal. I am applying for a job as marketing manager for our local spa. Titter.

BandOMothers · 25/01/2012 14:35

Well natural I think it's because they appeal in a "treat" sense to those who can't afford a monthly fee....hence the mention of them being somehow patronising earlier in the thread.

They know not many people can commit to 50 a month...but many can afford a one off of 100 for a "special" day out.

Coral you should get on my job!

"Relax in the beutfully tranquil "Piss Pool" where your senses will be soothed by the scent of fresh urine. Your visit to "Patronising Palace" will be enhanced by the medical atmosphere...watch the women in their fluffy robes as they wander the halls in various states of desperation.

No it seems a bit daft. I quite like one at center parcs (yes yes i know bit of a mn no-no), £50 for a couple to go for 3 hours, plus 3 hrs of crech for ds. No lunch or treatment tbf, but I like wafting about in dressing gown! Plus I think it's much better than most spas in that there's 15 different rooms, with different temps etc. Also nice jacuzzi which I will now be envisaging as a piss pool, so thanks for that.... Grin

There is a falling asleep room as well, which is nice to chill out in with good book, but can't fall asleep - last year woman next to me did, and fell on the (tiled) floor with a quite a thump! Would be mortified.

ENormaSnob · 25/01/2012 14:39

They are always on offer on late rooms and groupon.

Think my friend paid bout 26 quid for a spa day inc a treatment and lunch. She said it was great.

coraltoes · 25/01/2012 14:40

Band. It sounds like a wonderful place. You should submit that.

YNK · 25/01/2012 14:49

My local callege does terrific 1hr massages for £6. Better than any I have had at posh places!

YNK · 25/01/2012 14:50

College, obviously!

TopazMortmain · 25/01/2012 14:50

They are bliss because:

Your phone does not follow you
It's quiet (if you don't like the plinky plonk music ask them to turn it off)
You get to lie down for ages in the middle of the day
Someone else gets to worry about your skin, probably with tools and a big light
You get to splash about in warm / hot water with bubbles
Someone else has to worry about taking all the grim layers off your feet
All those knots and painful muscles are smoothed out by strong hands

Love...

cardibach · 25/01/2012 14:51

YANBU to not see the attraction. YABU if you are suggesting that those of us who do wrong, or duped or whatever. Each to their own, isn't it?
I love the pool/steam room/sauna combo, quiet relaxation and treatments. Love massages in particular.
I don't really like the hotel ones, though, I prefer a proper one. Ideally I like more than a day, too, but I can't afford that too often!

BandOMothers · 25/01/2012 14:53

coral don't tempt me! I don't think they'd notice!

I actually need to go on one before I judge don't I? Pity I can't afford it! Grin How ironic is that??? I write about how great they are and they don't pay me enough to GO on one!

Youre all being very mean Smile and havent been anywhere decent.

My besr local spa is at a hotel, but its very quiet in the days, when ive been with friends we are normally amongst 2 other people at most. It costs £65 for a full day, you get an hour long treatment of your choice, a two course lunch and use of the relaxation room, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, gym and pool.

The best one ive ever been to was Ragdale Hall, where they bring breakfast to your room on a tray, the food is all fresh amd as good as the best resturant ive ever eaten in, you can eat dinner in your robe if you like, and the most amazing treatments, but it didnt come cheap, its just a health spa so no other guests, it has 2 shops, little bars you can have a drink in etc, i loved it.

Next week me and dh are going to a spa resort, dh will prob spend one day in the spa but i plan on having a few treatments.

However i know what some of you mean about hotels, i belong to a gym at a hotel and if i went to a spa there id be very disappointed

Fennel · 25/01/2012 15:00

This is the nicest one I've been to. Not in the UK though. Not a trace of piss.

I really enjoy Spa Days, my idea of bliss!! Strangely enough they didnt appeal pre-DC, in those days you would be more likely to find me doing something adventurous to relax.

However, these days I crave ?me time? and, for me, a spa day is heavenly.

I can see why it?s not for everyone but I really love it. I love chilling out (yes in a dressing gown) with a book, I love having a swim in a beautiful pool, I love being pampered with a massage or similar, I love the sauna, steam room etc., I even love sleeping for an hour or so.

The place I love more than anywhere is Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire. Not sure how to do a link but I will try: www.ragdalehall.co.uk/.

The spa type rooms are amazing- not just the usual sauna etc. but they have a whole area of different rooms: stunning candlelit pool, an outside pool with massage jets, a hot menthol room that is dark, a colouflow cave, a freezing thunder shower, and more (soumds a bit poncetastic now that I type it).

The most ridiculous thing is that I love going alone most of all!! I am a sociable type usually (honestly), but I love this place so much that I like to do it alone [wierdo].

It is totally indulgent and I feel a million dollars afterwards.

I am possibly very very strange Blush!!

owlelf · 25/01/2012 15:27

Mosschops Sorry, it took me so long to press post that i didnt notice that you have already mentioned Ragdale.

pootles there is a wonderful falling asleep room at ragdale too. It sounds like madness but its brilliant!!

exoticfruits · 25/01/2012 15:33

I have only had one but absolutely loved it! I have now got another to use before June. I shall go on my own and just have a wonderful, peaceful time. Pure self indulgence and lovely. Smile

Mrsrobertduvall · 25/01/2012 15:35

I do not like spa days but spa 4 days
I go every year for 4 days on my own, to enjoy peace, calm and read 10 books.
And have lovely treatments (not a facial or false nail in sight)
Bliss.

diddl · 25/01/2012 15:40

I love swimming & I like the idea of swimming for a while then sitting in a jacuzzi for a while & alternating between the two.

That´s it though!

Plus I love swimming outdoors so quite fancy the Thermal(?) spa at Bath.

I love spa days. This one's lovely www.nirvanaspa.co.uk/ . The facilities are excellent and it's so relaxing. They have the most fab floatation pool with Dead Sea salt in it. The food is light but delicious. My parents got me and my sister vouchers and we went together just before DS was born. I liked it so much I kindly got my DH 2 vouchers for our wedding anniversary! He actually loved it too.
