To expect the job office to let me use their toilet?

It's a long drive from home to the employment agency here in Sweden. When I got there I was desperate for a pee and asked if I could use the toilet. I was directed there and found they were locked so I went back and asked for a key to let me in. The member of staff who directed me talked to another member of staff and she told me that I wasn't allowed to use the toilet.

I put my hand on my bump in the hope they'd notice my pregnancy and be a bit lenient this time, especially as it was 10am and that was my appointment time there. My boyfriend started to argue with them and I grabbed his hand and said 'leave it' which pissed him off no end so I had to apologise to him while we practically ran outside round to a travel agency who grudgingly let me use the loo.

Was it really that much to ask to use the toilet before my appointment? When we got back we were told off for being late!

In hindsight I should have gone to a corner of the room and pulled my pants down to show my intent...

whats an employment agency and how long was the "long drive"

MixedBerries · 25/01/2012 12:14

This happened to me at the Jobcentre in Wales. I was on time for the appointment, had made a 45 minute bus journey to get there and was 6 months pregnant. I asked to use the loo but they said they were for staff only. I asked if there were any toilets nearby and they said they weren't sure. I said that either they could let me use their loo or I could wander round an unfamiliar town looking for a public loo and be late for the appointment. They opted for the latter. So I went and pissed in their car park. Not something I wanted to do but I was desperate by this point so needs must etc. Completely ridiculous. YANBU.

pregnant ladies are the exception. They should have let you use the loo. Yanbu

They should have let you use the loo.

However, having worked at a jobcentre, the last time I let someone use the loo, I found them in there 30 minutes later unconcious and covered in vomit. Boy, did I get a bollocking for that. She was only a young lass as well, seemed really sweet. I didn't have any idea what was wrong with her, but it turns out she'd been to the doctors in the morning as she felt ill and then had some sort of fit in the loo :(

Never saw her again after that.

Pee on their floor next time.

A heroin addict died in our Job Centre loo. Sadly they are covering their backs by having a blanket no public access policy. But you can see why...

Kladdkaka · 25/01/2012 13:26

YABU they couldn't possibly allow you to use the toilet. That would mean that Arbetsförmedling had provided a useful service and the earth would fall off it's axis. (For those in the UK, it's like the job centre, except without jobs or help finding jobs, or help of any other nature really.)

Boomerwang · 25/01/2012 13:29

Were none of the staff at all concerned for the poor girl or the addict?

The drive was 40 mins in the cold snow and over bumpy road, both of those things seem to intensify my need to pee never mind my 6 month bump causing me to have a weaker bladder.

I'd have no qualms about dropping my drawers on a busy street and peeing in a gutter... well actually I would I suppose... I'd find an alleyway then - which is JUST what you want to catch yourself in. I just think it was unreasonable :(

I really wish I'd just let my boyfriend have his say but I was so desperate I didn't want to stand there any longer than I had to. Grrrumph!

YANBU. Happened to me in a job centre too. I wasn't pregnant (no kids) but have a bladder problem. When I asked they told me no, staff only. I explained that I could not hold on, I had a medical problem that meant I couldn't and would wet myself (and I was starting to properly panic in a very visible manner by this point) and they told me that they didn't let anybody use the toilet. I ended up leaving and missing my appointment slot.

The staff at my local JC at the time were absolutely bastards Angry

plantsitter · 25/01/2012 16:22

It's still a by-law in London that you can pee anywhere you like if you're pregnant - even in a Policeman's hat if you ask him. Shame you weren't here really (I kept longing for someone to refuse me use of their loo in my pregnancies so I could haughtily throw the book of law at them, but they never did sadly).

When I was pg with DD I had terrible all day sickness for while. Obviously I had to leave the house occasionally so one afternoon feeling really quite well for once I ventured to WH Smiths to buy a newspaper. while there I suddenly felt sick - very sick. I approached a member of staff explained and requested to use the toilet urgently she called the manager over they said no, the public could not use their toilets whatever the reason.

Had my hand over my mouth, rushing out the store to at least try to limit it to the street when I could wait no longer and splattered the newspaper stand and unfortunately a customer with huge shower of vomit.

Manager rushed over and said "you didn't say you couldn't wait you should have told me you couldn't wait and we'd have let you use the toilet" Customer was unimpressed with staff too when she realised that they knew the situation. She drove me home ranting and raving about WH Smith's toilet policy and being very forgiving to me as I was of course mortified

So staff next time a pregnant woman requests use of your toilet remember this sorry tale and think twice!!

YANBU. A totally jobsworth attitude without any compassion or common sense. Job Centres should have to provide a toilet, particularly as you have to go to the job centre, it's not just a pastime or a hobby! Also think that councils should be obliged to provide a loo in all areas where it's likely to be needed.

blueballoon79 · 25/01/2012 20:17

I had to go to the job centre last week. Whilst there, my 2 year old daughter desperately needed the toilet.
I wasn't allowed to use their toilets to take her, so ended up having to walk to the nearest department store which made me late and made them even snootier than they usually are!
