Does this verge on misogyny - Daily Mail

I am not a daily mail reader and I don't agree with a lot of its views. But I know the daily mail is the only national newspaper with a majority female readership. I also understand that it is recognised in the newspaper industry to be the only national newspaper that makes a conscious effort to appeal to women.

So it does make me uneasy that on mumsnet, calling someone a daily mail reader appears to be seen as a terrible insult.

So AIBU to wonder if this verges on misogyny?

If it helps your uneasiness at all, the rabid hate of the DM on MN can mostly be based on the fact that MN users are mostly vaguely left-wing. The DM is deeply right-wing and happily bends stories to fit their agenda, which infuriates people. I voted tory in the last election and I find their anti-immigration, anti-PC, anti-poor people bias quite eye-popping.

Do you remember the story of how Birmingham city council banned Christmas a few years back, calling it Winterval? Absolute, total, outright lie. They had to do an official apology. But a brilliant example of how incredible they are at winding people up and getting reactions.

It's political not personal.

And their obsession with wheelie bins is just weird. Grin

"Absolute, total, outright lie. "

Doesn't stop their more rabid journos (I'm looking at you, Melanie Phillips) repeating it when they're off on a PC-gorn-mad rant.

It doesn't make the DM better that they try to 'appeal to women' if they do so by writing crap. Probably makes it a tool of the patriarchy Grin

I don't want something that the editorship of the DM deigns to think 'appeals to women', thanks all the same. I want something that appeals to intelligent human beings.

Dreadful human being.

Though not as bad as Ann Coulter, who said in 2001, ""I think [women] should be armed but should not [be allowed to] vote."

She's a misogynist and a woman - very impressive double act.

I 'read' the Daily Fail today at a friends house - it made me want a bath afterwards I felt so dirty.

I also wanted to write to that LittleJohn (?) twat and tell him he's a c*nt; but I think deep down he knows it is.

In answer to your question though YABU - if someone male or female spouts the DM as gosple they deserve to be insulted

DharmaLovesDraco · 24/01/2012 18:05
  • he knows he is

Although 'it' does also work...

They also have bizarre obsessions with particular women. I have no idea who Miranda Kerr is, but she seems to be featured in the DM every single day. They print pictures of her with taglines such as Miranda Kerr changes her tshirt! Mental.

DH used to buy it secretly and read it at work.

He tried to bring it home once, it didn't go well.....
