to not allow 8 yr old dd and friend on youtube or computer when round to play?

that's it really - just think that when you have someone round to play that's what you do not sit in front of a screen together something you can do anytime when friend is not round. DD normally plays stuff when she has friend round...

Well actually, YABU if that is what they want to do. Maybe limit the time they spend on there, say half hour or so but their idea of what they want to do and yours may be entirely different.

KalSkirata · 24/01/2012 16:34

why not if thats what they want to do?

duvet · 24/01/2012 17:03

Well maybe but they've since gone off and made up their own game now anyway!

Unless you have lots of time to supervise what they are watching YANBU.

neolara · 24/01/2012 17:05

I completely agree with you.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 24/01/2012 17:06

I wouldn't have a problem with it, as long as the computer is somewhere you can see what they're looking at without being too obvious.

Hulababy · 24/01/2012 17:06

Depends on what they want to do, who they are with and how long they are playing together tbh. Lots of variables would make up my decision with regards to my DD.

elvisaintdead · 24/01/2012 17:06

My 8 year old decides within reason - happy for them to spend about 30-45 mins on screen time and they have to pick if that's TV, wii/club penguin or whatever then it's usually or some elaborate "goodies and baddies" game which involves closing all the curtains and bombing it around the house at full speed and volume.....BOYS!!

janelikesjam · 24/01/2012 17:16

YANBU. I think its better for them to have real live playing fun, you know like children did once upon a time, and its your house! I'm probably old-fashioned. But either way Be True To Yourself!!!!!

I agree with you - we only have one family PC (and DH needs that for work) so I do not allow DS to play on PC when he has friends round.

Popbiscuit · 24/01/2012 17:23

I agree with you. Not just because I don't want them using the time for screen-based activities but because YouTube is filled with some very unsavoury content that is far too easy for small people to stumble upon (and our kids have a PC in the kitchen). YouTube is like a landmine of innappropriate-ness.

Popbiscuit · 24/01/2012 17:24

X-post. Sorry, Rag!

elvisaintdead · 24/01/2012 17:50

janelikesjam - children can have screen time AND good old fashioned fun you know. It's not either or! Hmm

RainboweBrite · 24/01/2012 17:54

I have had to tell my DS and his friend (aged 9) off before for watching scantily clad young ladies showing off their assets on youtube, but I still wouldn't ban them from the computer entirely. If that's their choice, that's what they should be allowed to do. and God forbid they might actually want me to do something with them then

FiveHoursSleep · 24/01/2012 18:02

I don't let mine on the computer unless I can directly supervise, and I often can't when they have friends around.
So they watch TV or play other games instead. DD2 (8) has a playdate here atm, they've watched TV, made popcorn, played upstairs for a bit and come down and watched a movie.

TracyK · 24/01/2012 18:07

yes YouTube is a nightmare for unsuitable stuff. And the videos a only a couple of mins long. So by the time your realise what they are looking at it's too late.
As long as both kids want to play club penguin or the like it's fine, but not YouTube.

DilysPrice · 24/01/2012 18:09

I normally say no because I'll be downstairs cooking tea and unable to supervise.
I let them play multi-player games on the Wii instead.

cutteduppear · 24/01/2012 18:11

YANBU
They can chat on the computer from their respective homes.

crazygracieuk · 24/01/2012 18:19

It depends on what sort of thing they are watching but YouTube is banned at school so you are not unreasonable.

My 8 year old and her friends use YouTube for singing along to music like Taylor Swift and watching videos of Justin Bieber banging his head.

10 year old ds watches videos on how to do scooter/bmx stunts.

Some of their friends watch unsavoury stuff like scantily clad ladies and horror stories which is not ok. (I know this as they tried to show my kds)

duvet · 24/01/2012 20:13

Thanks everyone, like what you said janelikesjam be true to yourself, I go with my instincts usually instead of the crowd, but sometimes I get a niggle of doubt. :-)
