Help ladies! This morning I got a call from the firm in question offering to interview me next week. What shall I do??? I dont want to waste their time BUT..... WWYD? x

I had my first interview with a firm THEN found out I was pregnant. Honesty seemed to be the best policy, so told them, and it turned out brilliantly - have spent 4 months freelancing for them so both sides got to know each other, then we both plan for me to return full time in the Autumn.

I would go the interview and see how you get on. You might find it isn't a dream job, might not get it...

I would worry about it if and when you are offered the job, you aren't doing anything wrong by going for an interview.

If you do get the job however, you won't be entitled to any SMP because you won't have had the requisite service 6 month service period by the 15th week before your due date.

Tough one here.

Are you showing?

Would you want to go back full time after baby (I know you can't really answer this yet!)

I'd say ... go for the interview just to see if you do get offered the job (if you don't, it will stop the what ifs) ... and I know this sounds bonkers, but my old boss offered a pregnant woman a job as she was so perfect for the role she wanted her working for the company after she'd finished her maternity! So you really do never know.

Hope that helps :)

Go to the interview, keep quiet about the pregnancy. Worry about what's next if/when you're offered the job.

Even then, I'd be careful not to throw opportunities away too quickly. Without meaning to be negative or insensitive, if you've only just found out about the pregnancy it might not mean it'll end in a baby ifswim.

Don't do it - they will hate you. Phone them up to tell them and say they should expect to hear from you in a a year's time (or whenever.)

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 24/01/2012 16:05

I would go for it, and accept the job if offered it. Some women don't discover they're pregnant until 12 weeks or later anyway...

maddening · 24/01/2012 16:11

go for it if you would def return after maternity - if you got it then whilst no smp you would be entitled to sma

stinkingbishop · 24/01/2012 16:33

If you CAN do it freelance for a while fyi the tax situation is better. Plus as per above, no, you won't get SMP but if you have worked 26 weeks in the 66 weeks before your EDD then you can get maternity allowance of just over £100/wk.

The same happened to me as newmummy said - and it was a massive ego boost frankly, which is always nice!

Plus freelancing gives you control of when you stop, you can do less days etc.

I think this is a really individual decision to make and everyone will think differently about it. I was in a very similar position to you a few months ago. I applied for the job, was offered an interview, accepted and then found out I was in the very early stages of pregnancy. I had experienced two miscarriages only a number of months before, so there was a lot going through my head at the time. In the end, agonising over making a decision and what the outcome may be was so stressful that I decided to cancel the interview, and as soon as I did I felt relieved and de-stressed! I still wonder if I should have gone for it, particularly as I currently don't know if I will be able to return to work after maternity leave (I've been on temporary contracts for the last couple of years), but I'll never know! So I suppose I'm saying that I know how hard it is, but only you can decide what to do and what feels right. You might have a gut instinct about what action to take, I think I did in the end. Good luck!

Go for it. As others have said, if you're offered the job you can make the decision then. You may be perfect for them and they are happy to take you on but you won't know if you don't go for it. Good luck
