I know you can spell your kid's names however you like, but as I live in wales my friend has called her son the welsh word for "thunder" and she has spelt it wrong, should I tell her? She only gave birth last week

Are you sure? What is it?

FoxSocks · 24/01/2012 12:17

yes ... and you might want to check if the wrong speling mans something else entirely too!

SoupDragon · 24/01/2012 12:17

You could just "double check" whether they have gone for the traditional spelling of XXXXXXX or if the spelling on the birth announcement is correct.

rather than saying "Oy! Thicko! its spelt XXXXX, not YYYYY" :)

JackieBauer · 24/01/2012 12:18

Ok thunder in welsh is Taran, she has spelt it Tarran, not much of a difference I know but ther is never a double "r" in welsh, I'd want to know but I think she'll just think I'm being a bitch

Maybe they want a "quirky individual " spelling Wink

Jackstini · 24/01/2012 12:21

Does she believe it is Welsh for thunder though (is she Welsh/living in Wales?) or is it just she likes the name Tarran?

Ilovedaintynuts · 24/01/2012 12:21

None of your business. If you tell her she will always remember you made a fool of her son's name Grin

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 24/01/2012 12:22

But what if she realises when it's too late and is then very cross that the OP didn't say anything?

JackieBauer · 24/01/2012 12:24

It's ok, I just googled welsh boys names and I'm wrong, phew, so happy to be wrong, when used as a name it really does have a double "r"

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 24/01/2012 12:25

You can do it without "making a fool of her sons name"

SoupDragon · 24/01/2012 12:25

Problem solved :o

SoupDragon · 24/01/2012 12:25

(but it looks nicer with one!)

JackieBauer · 24/01/2012 12:26

OMG I really could have put my big foot in it!! Also gonna delete this thread now incase she is on here, thanks everyone xx

How strange, I know a couple of Tarans all Indian, no welsh connection. . .

WinterIsComing · 24/01/2012 12:46

That's a lovely name. I do understand your concern though. Ex SIL named her DD, "Gabrille" (Gabrielle) thinking that's how it is actually written and I have to sit on my hands / turn my phone off every time I see it on a card.

mojitomania · 24/01/2012 12:59

I'd just run it by her in a nice way as SoupDragon suggested.

I say this due a bit of a mishap, it went like this

ExP wanted something Greek added to DS's name due to his Grandmother being from Zante. He wanted his name christian name in Greek, which is Jerry. No-one knew the translation or indeed how to spell it. I rang the embassy and explained this, the person at the embassy told me Eurasimos so this went down on his birth certificate only to discover it doesn't mean that at all!

Poor DS Sad Grin
