To think there may be something wrong with the way I walk

I am a "slipper".

As a child and a teen (and a young adult)I have always had a problem with shoes. The bottom of the shoes always seem to be slippery and I spent a lot of time in my youth slipping over. I have many embarrassing memories of slipping when at university. I'd be walking and the soles would be slippy and I d go.

Sadly, this problem doesnt seem to have gone away. I want so badly to wear nice shoes but the only ones I seem to be ok in are trainers and walking boots. I want so badly to look nice and wear nice boots but when walking on concrete, the soles always slip for me. I walk outside a lot for work.

I lashed out and bought some nice ankle boots today and the girl in the store told me they'd be ok but yes, you guessed it, at the school run, the road and pavement were slippery.

Ive bought all sorts - cheap, expensive - its not just cheap shoes .

AIBU in thinking I have a problem with my gait? Does anyone else have this problem?

try one of these places - they can do gait analysis for you if the GP has no interest in helping you; and they may be able to help you deal with it as well.

Of course - it may still just be your shoes - have you checked the heels as well as the soles? I had problems with my boots, that had decent grips on the soles but the heels were slippy. Rubber grips on the heels fixed that problem.

Maybe see a physiotherapist. I kept going over on my ankle and a physio said it wasn't due to a muscle weakness but a problem with my brain sending and receiving balance messages quickly enough. I was given lots of exercises involving standing on one leg, throwing a ball against the wall or with my eyes closed.

I know in some good sports or running shops, they get you to run over a device that will tell you how you distribute your weight when running - maybe something like that would be useful.

Yes, Betty, in the running shop by me they have treadmills and they film your feet and then slow it down and you can see how your weight goes through your feet. As soon as the slowed down film is played back it becomes obvious where the problem is.

Does a physio/podiatrist have those sort of machines? I assume they would do. Otherwise OP maybe feign interest in taking up running and go to one of those shops until you can get an appointment with someone?

I get annoyed just reading this thread, not sure why.

I dont have that problem, but I stumble, trip etc alot down to my gait, so I can imagine its possible. If its worrying you might be worth seeing a podiatrist just to be sure.
