I got ID-ed on Thursday attempting to buy a bottle of Lambrini Blush I started a thread in chat about it as I couldn't decide whether to be flattered (I'm 32 and they ID-ed me!!! [stealth boast emoticon]) or mortified (lambrini!!!! In my defence it was for a JOKE gift)

Anyway, in support of our local co-op, which is massively struggling since a humungous Sainsburies opened on its doorstep, I went back the next day to buy my Lambrini, taking my passport with me. The conversation went something like this:

Her: "Have you got ID today?"
Me: "Yup, here you go. [big smile] Now you know I'm 32 I'll make sure I come to you every time I have alcohol"
Her: "And I'll ask to see your ID again"
Me: "Hahahah"
Her: "No, seriously. Every time you come in I will need to see your ID"
Me: "But you've seen it. You know I'm 32"
Her: "Doesn't matter. I'll need to see it again"
Me: "What? That's ridiculous. I don't want to carry my passport with me everywhere"
Her: "Well then you won't get served. The law says I have to check every time. I even have to ID my friends"

What?! This isn't right is it? If she knows I'm over 18 then she can serve me can't she? I know it's petty, but I'm seriously considering a letter to head office to complain. I want to support my local co-op, but I really don't want to have to carry my passport with me every time I leave the house.

I used to work somewhere that we had to log our ID checks. So if the same member of staff had the same customer, they didn't have to ask again, and if it was ever quibbled by management, there was a log.
A little time consuming, but effective.

I had to check ID for every customer that looked under 30 when I worked for somerfield and it didn't matter how many times they'd been in. I let a friend off once and got a written warning and made to retake the test relating to age-restricted products.

Really LittleDragon?! Wow. Okay, so the girl definitely wasn't being unreasonable in ID-ing me, but if that's the case it's a ridiculous policy so I'll be hitting 'send' on the email I've drafted to Co-op. She does recognise me and she knows I'm over 18.

Catsmamma - the Sainsbury's staff always hit the 'clearly over 25' button for me too. I really do look over 25! Honest!

Excruciatingly though, a few years ago I was ID-ed buying a box set of 15-rated Almovodar DVDs. I was about 28, wandering round town with a new boyfriend who I was trying to impress with my interest in foreign language films that have actually never been taken out of the cellophane and absolutely mortified. The shop assistant backed down when I said how old I was; the bf almost died laughing and then insisted on seeing my driving licence himself to check he wasn't dating a minor.

There is a woman in the co-op who always id's my 35 year old friend. She had it out with the manager as no other member of staff went over board the way she did. But still she gets id'ed.

Justabouthadenough · 22/01/2012 18:26

I wish I'd get id'ed. Just once is all I ask. (i was always the underage one that was sent to buy alcohol and fags coz i never got id'ed.) am 33 now. :( OP please send cashier my way :)

ruddynorah · 25/01/2012 09:24

Groovee she'll still get IDd because it's up to the assistant to ask not up to the manager or the other staff. It would contravene the licence for the manager or other staff to tell her to stop asking your friend. If the assistant wants to ask then the manager has to support them, not undermine them.
