I have an 8 month old lo and love making different things for her to eat...we do purée and some finger foods too! We have a twin blade hand blender, my friend was mortified that we do not have a food processor...so aibu to think I don't need one or aibu and missing out on a great machine?!?

I've never owned one either.
We can't miss what we've never had.

I don't remember using one for making food for dc when they were little but I do use it for chopping veg quickly for some family meals and a few other things so ynbu if you generally manage without anyway.

We've got one somewhere, but it's just too cumbersome to store and use.

A hand blender does the job, and makes a cracking soup Smile

Had one for years before DCs came along but horror of horror we didn't possess a microwave! If you are fine as you are then your friend sounds odd

troisgarcons · 21/01/2012 19:41

I dont have one, I want one, but Im not paying in excess of 300 quid for a kitchen appliance!

I have however seen a Russell Hobbs one, reduced to 35 quid in Argos, but I will go and look at it ful price in Currys first and see if it has all the bits and pieces I want. A glorified food chopper I do not want!

Scholes34 · 21/01/2012 19:44

Am loving my food processor (wedding present and still going strong after 17 years), though never used it for food for the DCs when they were little - portions involved were too small (even when doing lots for the freezer).

If you have a food processor it has to be out on the sideboard, plugged in and ready to go - permanently - else you'll never use it. I use it for making shortcrust pastry and anything else that requires "rubbing in", mincing down meat sauce for lasagne, etc, making breadcrumbs, chopping and slicing veg, grinding nuts and coffee, making soups, making banana milkshakes (frozen banana and milk), making tapanade, making Hummingbird cupcakes and icing and probably lots more things. But not for small portions of veg to make into a puree.

Apart from an iron and vacuum cleaner, the only other small electric applicance I have ever had was a Kenwood blender. I hardly ever use it but do about twice a year. I found no need for any other electric implement to use for cooking. When my late DH came into my life, he brought a microwave (I wouldn't be without that now), a sandwich toaster/maker (used twice in 17 years), a whisk and a carving tool knife which only he used.

There are so many electrical gadgets available but there is really no need for any of them. Use a wooden spoon in a bowl or a hand held grater and get some exercise!

You don't need a food processor to make baby food but they are handy for making other dishes quickly. If you've managed for this long without missing one then you won't want one.

RuleBritannia · 21/01/2012 19:46

appliance

AnonymousBird · 21/01/2012 19:50

Good lord! Hand blenders just are sooooo useful. Food processor?? No need!

YANBU!

HandMini · 21/01/2012 19:53

Im managing just I fine with a triblade hand held stick blender. Easy, quick etc. as others have said, food processors are too large for the small quantities of purée even when batch-baby-cooking.

Having said that I'd love a food processor if I had the kitchen space. Bloody Nigella is forever going on about them telling you to "process" this, that and the other in recipes. Does she mean "whizz it all together"?

breatheslowly · 21/01/2012 19:56

We have one and use it a fair bit. But YANBU for baby food. Unless you are feeding a huge number of babies or making months of food in advance, it would just smear a few baby portions up the side and then do no more. A hand blender would be much more suited for making baby food.
