To Think People Should Put a Mask On if Coughing in the Hospital ER(A&E)?

I was at the ER (A&E) Thursday night, in the Triage waiting room. There is a sign in the room saying if you have a cough, or have had a fever in the last 24 hours, to put on a mask. There is a table underneath the sign with a box of masks, sanitizer and tissues. They also have a taped message played repeatedly, only about 10 sentences and they state the same as the sign, plus add if you have a cough or fever, please distance yourself 3 metres away from other patients.
A man came in with a little boy about 4 years old, who was flushed and looked feverish to me, and coughing, and sat down beside me. Oh course, I didn't whisk out a thermometer and take the boys temp, but he sure looked feverish, and he was coughing.

I waited a couple of minutes, until he heard the message twice, then said to the man, "Excuse me, there are masks over there if he has a cough". He said "Oh, that's ok, thanks" and didn't get a mask. Right then I was called in, so I didn't have to sit there. I had been about to move across the room to sit. After the nurse was finished with me, I mentioned to her about them. Later on I saw them walking and the little boy had a mask on.
So, I was wondering, was I being fussy telling the nurse?

And I know nobody really knows what others are thinking, but what was he thinking? I don't know why he didn't put a mask on the child when the sign and taped message instructed people coughing to do so.

And in terms of the idea of people being rushed through because their breathing is hindered. I cough partly because my breathing is always hindered - all of the time.

YANBU.

I wish they did that here and enforced it. Sitting in hospital or surgery waiting rooms always makes me uncomfortable because of what other people might be spreading.

Good point, Eurochick! Grin I'm imagining massive palatial American waiting rooms now, with acres of space and people dotted 3 m apart...

I wouldn't even attempt to fit a mask to a very young and coughing, upset child, TBH. Sorry, but this just seems to go with the territory of waiting rooms. It's not ideal, but on the other hand, I'm not at all sure I'd like a culture of masks in my local GP surgery waiting room. Confused

If it's a noxious time of year, I just keep the DC at my side, hiss 'will you STOP touching things!' out of the side of my mouth, and then watch as they do it anyway. Grin

It's like the bottles of handrub (alcohol based) at the doors

The signs not to attend the GP with Swine Flu symptoms

The signs not to use a mobile phone (they interfere with some machines. My Doppler picks up a mobile phone and does a series of beeps) .Sneakily using it behind a newspaper doesn't stop this

Not to visit wards if the visitor has had D&V (but they do)

And the patients who cough and splutter all over me.Or cheerily announce that they've been puking up for the last 4 days. Thanks.

And some masks are useless after a few minutes breathing, due to the water vapour.

One patient made me Shock telling me about her flu (in graphic detail) antibiotics, D&V, oxygen, high temperature but stated "You're okay, I'm sucking a Victory V".
Well, blinking flip. Victory Vs stop the spread of nasty seasonal flu (which we all know can kill) We'll not bother with the Flu Vaccine then! FFS.
