SWEARING ON CBBC ACCEPTABLE?

TV PROGRAM: Tracy Beaker Returns - Series 3, 4. Big Brother
AIRED ON THE CBBC CHANNEL AT 17:00 FRIDAY 20th January 2012.

Whilst I feel the behavior expressed by the children in this program by shouting at each other and the adults not very encouraging behavior for young viewers, I just about tolerate my 8 year old daughter watching this program.

However, 21 minutes into this particular episode there is a strong exchange of words between 2 brothers in a market location at the DVD stall. When one brother (Liam) asks " Why didn't you come forward or did you enjoy watching your brother being sent down" the other (Jack) replies "it made me feel sh*t!"

I couldn't believe swear words as strong as this were being written into the script of children's TV programs especially when aired at 5pm!!
As I was unsure that I heard correctly I watched the program again on the iPlayer and yes the "Sh*t" word was used.!!

This is totally unacceptable, is the BBC saying to our young children that to use such language in this form of vocabulary is acceptable?

Do they use words like 'shit' on programs like Eastenders?

This thread is weird. Of course it's not OK for there to be swearing on a kids TV program. I don't let DS watch Tracey Beaker because it's not age appropriate, but plenty of people will.

The word 'shit' in itself isn't a big deal, but I don't think swearing should be allowed at that time of day on a BBC channel.

Trixi
My proudest moment was shouting, "It does not matter what colour of fucking gummibears he gave you. Just EAT IT" at my 9yo DD.

Still makes me giggle.

Lol at white car. Quick thinking.

ToothbrushThief · 20/01/2012 22:20

I don't get this ah well kids hear it at school anyway, so no point hiding it at home.... There are kids who hear swearing at home and school. There are kids who witness porn and tell their friends. There are kids who drink alcohol at a very young age. It is part of life.

Doesn't mean I wish to portray it as normal.

VickityBoo · 20/01/2012 22:21

Nope not being unreasonable. I hate it. I was brought up to never swear or use words generally thought to be unpleasant and as an adult I have to say that I agree with my parents. I wasn't even allowed to say knackerd or bloody.

It didn't bother me growing up. I found other, more interesting language to use. I certainly wouldn't say shit in front of anyone now except maybe a few friends and my partner - I still don't swear in front of my parents now.

So, if swearing is becoming normal in the eyes of tv execs then I'm not happy. After 9pm, fine. Before 9pm, totally not fine. In cbbc, utterly and completely unacceptable.

Go ahead. Make your complaint and don't feel bad about doing so.

ddubsgirl · 20/01/2012 22:23

havent read all of this but i remember years ago on a cbbc prog the word shit was used and phillip schofield saying sorry!

hippoCritt · 20/01/2012 22:24

Daubs I remember that a caller rang in about five star!

VickityBoo · 20/01/2012 22:25

So it was a misunderstanding? Phew.

usualsuspect · 20/01/2012 22:25

Or you could get a life

Yeah- give yourself a medal for that Hmm

VickityBoo · 20/01/2012 22:25

Lots of those kind of clips from old tv programmes are on YouTube by the way.

Thumbwitch · 20/01/2012 22:28

Iwantmyhat - no they don't - EE and the like are peculiarly clean of swearwords. Harry Potter has more swearwords in it than EE.

mothmagnet · 20/01/2012 22:28

Swearing on kids' tv (though it wasn't) = bad

Swearing heard by kids by people they trust or normal people, as long as they know it's naughty, is surely ok.

SweetLilyTea · 20/01/2012 22:32

I can swear like a trooper at times but I don't think swearing is acceptable on kids tv - so I'm a little relieved that it was 'sick' all along.

Actually, I say i don't swear in front of the dc but one time ds1 said to me 'Mum, last night you thought I was asleep but I heard you talking to daddy and you said 'fucking hell'! What can you say to that?

Even if shit had been said on CBBC I couldn't bring myself to complain though as I love the BBC too much!

MmeLindor. · 20/01/2012 22:35

Eau
I guess you had to be there to find it funny. It is not a regular occurrence, but a one off and yes, I did laugh about it later and still do.

IWantMyHatBack · 20/01/2012 22:35

Thumb - thought not.

Why are so many people saying it's OK to swear on Cbeebies...

ddubsgirl · 20/01/2012 22:36

hippo i remember that on going live lol lol told them they were fucking crap hahahahaha

usualsuspect · 20/01/2012 22:38

One of the best threads I ever read on MN was about inappropriate swearing at babies

Sadly that was back in the good old days

LineRunner · 20/01/2012 22:39

MmeLindor, I was having a vair earnest conversation with DS last year about his options in negotiating with a friend at school over perceived slights and infractions and eventually I said, deadpan, 'Or I suppose you could just tell him to fuck off.'

We actually did laugh at the absurdity of it all.

GypsyMoth · 20/01/2012 22:39

Nobody swore on cbeebies!! Stop frothingHmm

MmeLindor. · 20/01/2012 22:41

LOL Linerunner.

that is what I want, for my DC to be able to have a laugh with me, while realising that there are words that are not suitable for every conversation and surroundings.

CakeMixture · 20/01/2012 22:43

Nancy123 - perhaps you should watch the episode again?
I havent read the whole thread to see if anyone else has already said this but what the actor actually says 21 minutes into the programme is

"It made me feel sick"

So if you make a huge fuss about swearing in that particular episode of tracey beaker you are going to look pretty foolish

HTH :)

ToothbrushThief · 20/01/2012 22:43

IWantMyHatBack Fri 20-Jan-12 22:35:24

Why are so many people saying it's OK to swear on Cbeebies...

..because unless you call your DC a little cunt whilst shitting yourself over the fucking noise they make

..you're disgusted of tunbridge wells, clutching your pearls and need to get a life Hmm

Or maybe that's just a quick and easy jibe with no real truth to it

Chubfuddler · 20/01/2012 22:43

Sorry we're not edgy enough for you usual suspect. There's always moldies I suppose.

usualsuspect · 20/01/2012 22:45

Miaw < gets saucer of milk for Chubfuddler >

DioneTheDiabolist · 20/01/2012 22:54

Tracey Beaker. Is a bigger kid programme. With bigger kid issues. And in order to be realistic the language cannot be CBeebies.

Understand this: there are less protected kids than yours. The CBBC should engage them all. If you are not happy with that, then (just like with tinternet) you will need to supervise them in order to ensure they don't see what you disapprove of.
