Just read the other thread.

I'm underwhelmed.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 21/01/2012 02:07

fear not, zigzag, i'd type it wrong as well if i spoke about 'myself' in third person. off to see if it was shit or sick. story of my life, really...

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 21/01/2012 02:08

it's SHICK. Shock [unhelpful]

Foxinsocks · 21/01/2012 06:15

Dd used to love Tracey beaker. I find myself quite nostalgic for it compared to the shite they find on the Disney channel (wizards of Waverley, Zac and Cody bleurgh).

LowRegNumber · 21/01/2012 07:54

I don't see the problem tbh, an adult used the very mild swear word. I don't think there is many dc who have not heard it before in some context and all but the very little ones would know it is a swear used by adults... They are just words, the intent is important not the letters. In this case it was a positive usage, I would have agreed with you if it had been "you are a shit" or something but feeling bad about something? No I don't think that is a big deal.

happymole · 21/01/2012 08:11

He says

'It makes me feel shick '

I agree OP, this shocking example of lazy speaking is why the country is going to the dogs here's an example

RabidEchidna · 21/01/2012 16:26

No Zigzag I did not start the other thread, was not aware of the other thread either.

I hate TB and think it will have to be removed from telly time.
Vile children behaving like vile children wondering why no one wants them Grin

OP posts:
Collision · 21/01/2012 16:28

TB is banned in our house too due to the dreadful behaviour and attitude of the children on the programme and how it badly affects my two boys!

DH was appalled that I let them watch it and banned it immediately.

Horrid Henry was the last thing we banned.

AgentZigzag · 21/01/2012 16:38

'Vile children behaving like vile children wondering why no one wants them'

I know you've put a grin at the end of the sentence, but that's an awful thing to say about a portrayal of vulnerable children in care homes Rabid.

It's not meant to be totally true to life, but if they're vile it's because nobody wants them.

Nobody wanting you as a child would have the same effect on anyone.

However, I managed to turn out a vile teen all by myself Grin

edam · 21/01/2012 16:43

Agree with zigzag - that's a horrible thing to say, even about characters in a fictional portrayal of children in care. Do you have any idea how we all, as a society, fail them? How much likelier children in care to end up with no qualifications, with underage pregnancies, sectioned or in prison? How do you think you might turn out if you were shifted from foster home to foster home, and never knew when a social worker might turn up on your doorstep to take you away again? That stuff really does happen to far too many children in care. The state - that's all of us - makes a shit parent.

RabidEchidna · 21/01/2012 16:45

In almost every bloody episode I have seen they manage to throw food at each other, destroy something, be horrendous to each other and they never seem to be in School. I don't think they are betrayed as vulnerable at all TBH

OP posts:
laptopdancer · 21/01/2012 16:46

Its always summer on TBR

AgentZigzag · 21/01/2012 16:51

There were over 83000 children in some sort of care in 2009 Sad

It's easy to take unconditional love and the security of your own home for granted when you're a child, but it must have devastating effects on those who can't have them for whatever reason.

RabidEchidna · 21/01/2012 16:53

A lot of it is filmed in Ealing as well.

Actually I do know quite a few people that grew up in care,

I think TB is about as realistic at portraying the care system as bloody ET is to little green man

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 21/01/2012 16:54

If it was true to life Rabid, you'd really have something to complain about.

Older children sexually abusing younger children and self harm aren't really what you'd call entertainment.

Doobydoo · 21/01/2012 16:57

Not really bothered about shit.
Am concerned however re Ionicles character saying @of@ insted of 'have' My ds2 is 4 and watches it.He also watches Beaker with his older brother where I would be expecting 'language'

Doobydoo · 21/01/2012 16:59

Agree AgentzigzagSad Tis a very sugar version of a children's home isn't it?
Fancy saying shitShock...notSmile

RabidEchidna · 21/01/2012 17:00

Zigzag believe me when I say I know the world out there is a bad place for a lot of people, I know the system is broken and I know there are a lot of children out there in care who are never going to have happy lives.... but back to the TV show... I think the children portrayed on it are vile, rude and nasty, I do not see how this effects my view on real life as I can tell the two apart

OP posts:
Doobydoo · 21/01/2012 17:02

Rabid I think the children on there are watered down and too reasonable compared to real life

TheMonster · 21/01/2012 17:02

It looks to me like the actor couldn't say 's' clearly and says it as 'sh', so that 'sick' comes out as 'shick'.

cory · 21/01/2012 17:09

imho it is up to parents to decide whether their individual child is mature enough to understand that TB behaves badly because of her messed up life or not

dd and I had quite insightful (on her part) discussions as to why TB behaved in the way she did and how sad it was that she kept messing up

anyway, claiming that every character in a children's story has to be a role model seems bizarre to me

my dcs had fairytale sessions at nursery

they none of them grew up to think it's ok to poison people with apples

RabidEchidna · 21/01/2012 17:10

My sister worked for social services for a while removing children from their parents, it was the worst job she ever had she said.

I knew a lovely girl who was in foster care and shunted from place to place, so I know the "real life" aspect of it,

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 21/01/2012 18:32

Sorry if I was being patronising Rabid. I try to protect my DDs from stuff as well, so it's not as though I don't know why someone would choose not to let their DC watch TB.

I felt you were making light of the situation children like TB find themselves in, and from what I've seen of the program, the bad behaviour is always balanced out with TB being picked up on it. Then you see the way she is is just a protective shell because of the damaging effect her life has had on her.

My 11 YO has been reading Jacqueline Wilson books for a couple of years now, and I can honestly say it's made her a better person for being able to see not everyone is as lucky as she is.

I agree with cory in that it can be an opportunity to discuss how shit life can be the experiences other children have no choice over.

RabidEchidna · 21/01/2012 18:37

No worries zigzag, I did put it badly.

I meant I find the pretend children on TB vile and understand why no one fosters them, cake chucking little buggers Grin
I also know it is so far removed from the real care system.
I do not like DS2 watching it and I really did think the bloke said shit (and am not alone in that).

OP posts:
TheMonster · 21/01/2012 18:40

I think he clearly said 'shick'.
