I am watching this on Catch up and I am Shock that these men are fighting in front of their young impressionable kids, and then the kids are copying them by fighting with each other. Even the little toddler is having a go! This just seems so wrong, I know its part of the traveller culture but does not make it right. Do they think you can resolve everything using your fists. One of them said something like 'its good that there are still proper men out there' erm no beating each other to pulp is not being a proper man Hmm

I think that the word traveller is a pc term

I don't think "gypsy" is an offensive term to travellers is it?
What I meant was, that while Irish Travellers might refer to themselves as gypsies, or the media might do so, they are not Romany gypsies.
Their culture comes from a different set of circumstances, and they are not the same ethnic group at all.

Until the BFGW series Romany gypsies referrred to themselves as travellers but now want to show the difference and call themselves Romany gypsies.

Whilst I appreciate some traits of the culture may be hard to understand from what I see in the media beating people to a pulp is not confined to the Gypsy and Traveller cuture.

1sassylassy sorry don't agree I don't know any other culture in the uk were people claim this is tradition

Plenty of people of all races kick the shit out of each other but they don't seriously think it's a valid cultural practice

But he did try. And he continues trying. Did you not listen to him?

FrankiDon182 · 21/01/2012 10:41

Gypsy is not an offensive term on the whole, i am married a man whos family are english travellers. Very proud of their roots and who are ashamed of these diabolic programmes!
I still watch them, although all the animal cruelty really upset me and i found it extremely uncomfortable to watch (i missed the last 15 minutes because of this!)

Dont paint every one with the same brush. I have met some amazing, respectful, peaceful travellers with more dignity than most 'gorgers' i know!

mrsjay · 21/01/2012 11:46

i watched it when it was on it seemed quite arty put together iyswim , but they are like men used to be when men were supposed to be men , (not that im saying its right ) but we have equality and allow boys to cry in our culture whereas they dont , I thought it was barbaric and did spend a lot of it with my mouth opened , the child cruelty the animal cruelty the violence amongst men sent shivers through me , Big fat gyspy wedding it wasnt Shock

Birdsgottafly · 21/01/2012 11:56

If the programme would have gone fron the hunting senes to "our" slaughter houses and factory farmed animals, i know which would have shown real animal cruelty. The attitude towards the children is abusive, but tbh, there is to much hypocrisy towards hunting and blood sports being cruel from those that are not vegan.

mrsjay · 21/01/2012 12:51

I wasnt meaning the hunting was cruel they ate what they caught didnt they . , it was the cock fighting and kicking of dogs that kinda got me I think its the whole violent nature of the men and boys and that reflected in watching animals fight or kicking of a dog when it got in the way , I felt sorry for of the the little boys in the back of the car when his dad said he wasnt to cry , even if it was about smashing up the shed , it must take years for little boys to understand the whole culture of violence if the understand it at all ,

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 21/01/2012 15:23

The two parts which really upset me, we're when he called the toddler a Cunt, and when they were talking to the older boy about his puppy, and how he let slip that it stood up for him, and then tried to cover his tracks, by changing "when he beats me", to "when he smacks me!"
The whole programme was pretty disgusting really, the cock fighting and hare coursing, which are illegal, and the toddler driving the van.
I'm shocked that the film makers felt the new to paint them in such a bad light. BFGW is bad enough portraying the women in a way which encourages people to mock, but this profile of the men was horrendous.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 21/01/2012 15:25

It really is Jeremy Kyle, car crash tv, in a different guise!
