To feel unbelievably guilty about DC's 'rotten' tooth.

Well, I think it's rotten. DD (8) has complained about sore tooth for about a week - I thought it was loose :(

I looked at it tonight and half of the thing is missing and black near gum. I actually can't tell whether it has broken because of biting on something hard (I asked if she had opened a lid with her teeth- she says no) or whether it has literally rotted away :( :(

The thing is, I look at her teeth regularly and have not seen any sign of this coming.

Can this really happen within the space of a few weeks?

Go to the dentist!

Our dc's first teeth went a bit like this when they started to get loose. Rather brown and rotten looking - the molars at the back. I asked the dentist about it and he said it was normal and happened as the baby teeth started to be ready to fall out because the had reached the end of their natural life.

I think you should still get it checked out by the dentist though.

Can they Euph? It's the fact that half the tooth is suddenly ( in the last week) missing that's throwing me. I'll take her for emergency appt. tomorrow. Thanks :)

This happened to DD2, she definitely bit down on something, complained tooth was sore and there was a brownish patch. The dentist gave it a quick clean and put in a filling (one of those resin jobbies where they mix two components together and then sort of mould it in) and she's fine now. It's a baby tooth, the rest of her teeth are immaculate. Accidents happen.

Well, she's been to the dentist and it's rotten :( :(
He's filled it and I am on teeth cleaning watch for the next ten years!!!

He said a piece came away because it was going bad :(

I hope she was OK! It's life and far worse things can happen to them. FWIW I have one who rarely cleans his teeth and has never had a filling and one who is much more conscientious and has had three! My dentist says a lot of it is genetic. I have good strong teeth; DH's has spent a lot of money had to have a quite a lot of dental work on his.

Presumably it is a baby tooth, and as long as it hasn't rotten away entirely, it will still be sitting in its correct place so that it will have no impact on the adult one. It will all be fine.

Don't feel guilty, with teeth prevention is better than cure, but I think a lot of it is the luck of the draw. I never went to the dentist as a child (bad mother) and ate loads of sugary foods and never brushed my teeth (lazy child), but when I did eventually make it to the dentist I got so many "oh what lovely teeth you have!" comments.

I colleague of mine's DD had a milk tooth go rotten because a blackberry pip was stuck in it, apparently that'll do it every time.

redpanda13 · 20/01/2012 21:33

One of my DD's front teeth is starting to go yellow. Dentist has said it will eventually go black as her it will be a while before her milk teeth fall out. It has been caused by a bang to her tooth.
DD thinks it was when she fell in school last year. She did not bleed or tell anyone so nothing I could do about it. If it happens with her adult teeth she will hopefully have the sense to say. I know about the consequences of a bump to the teeth now.
I would get your DD to the dentist and don't feel guilty. You check your child's teeth. I think supervising the brushing is enough. You make me feel guilty Blush

oops just read now that it is rotten. sorry though milk teeth seem to be weaker than adult. i had loads of fillings as a child and had bulimia as a teen/young adult/not so young adult. all that acid and my adult teeth are not that bad. i was approved for adult braces on the nhs as i was 'viable' . strong healthy adult teeth???
