to wish that my surname was nearer the beginning of the alphabet

I have vivid memories of teachers making us do things in alphabetical order and because my surname was near the end of the alphabet, always either missing out altogether because time ran out or losing out on the novelty factor.
I married DH, whose name is also towards the end and now I see it happening again with my DC's.

Do people get a better deal with surnames at the beginning of the alphabet?

YANBU

My maiden name began with G, my married surname begins with R.

Not only that, but my maiden name had 4 letters, my surname now has 10.

I get bored halfway through writing it Grin

Agree. My surname was at the top half of the alphabet. Married DH and now, not only is our surname at the end of the alphabet, but it's also very, very, very common.

FrozenFlowers · 19/01/2012 20:56

My maiden name began with W, so I was almost always last in the line, or at most second from last. Not all that much comes after W! My married name begins with G, which I think is a nice distance through the alphabet - not likely to ever be the very first but not too far along either. I hated always being last!

bookbird · 19/01/2012 20:58

I was a W and always hated being last or sat up the back in the exam hall. I was 51st on the school trip to Holland so ended up the only one with a single passport. I am now in the middle which is great. I could see first or last being a pain.

YABU

I had a surname at the beginning of the alphabet and every time the 'back end' girls would whinge at how unfair it was to do it in alphabetical order and so we would end up doing it in reverse alphabetical order.

Oh, unless it was something nasty - like first person to vault the horse, then all of a sudden alphabetical order was really fair.

DC have a v surname so will be encouraging the whinging....

EndoplasmicReticulum · 19/01/2012 21:01

My maiden name was near the end. I didn't mind being near the bottom of the register for things like Rubella vaccinations, French orals etc. as someone else said. Actually for the shy it was quite useful, as everyone else always went first.

I had my maiden name when I started teaching, then got married, moved much nearer the start of the alphabet - and guess what - more cover!

Rhubarbgarden · 19/01/2012 21:02

I went from a C maiden name to a V married name. I'm worried for dd!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/01/2012 21:06

Mine is in the last third or so, was never really a problem. I kept it when I married. However the DCs have DH's surname and one of the (minor) reasons was that it would put them much nearer the beginning. They are never first, usually in the first 5 or so on the class list, whereas I was always about 5th from the end.

BrianButterfield · 19/01/2012 21:07

I went from V maiden name...to a bloody W married name! I will never know the joys of being near the start of the alphabet!

OnlyANinja · 19/01/2012 21:10

Change it then.

libelulle · 19/01/2012 21:11

I went from B to W and it has occurred to me that that is the wrong direction to go in. But on the other hand, there is no WAY that I would inflict my maiden name on my DCs. Some things are worse than coming at the end of the alphabet, and my maiden name was one of them Grin

PurpleKittyKnitting · 19/01/2012 21:14

libelulle I did the exact opposite to you and went from W to B!!

howlongwilltheynap · 19/01/2012 21:20

I agree with Flowers - G is the best place to be. G maiden and G married Smile

Strangely everyone on my degree course was A to H (I should add only 5 of us). I used to wonder if the people later in the alphabet had been so disadvantaged that they didn't make it. Though maybe they were all off doing a more interesting degree.....

daenerysstormborn · 19/01/2012 21:22

i always wished this at school too. i was a 'w', now an 'a', job done Wink

mumofthreekids · 19/01/2012 22:18

My maiden name began with A and I hated having to do everything first at school. I particularly remember a French oral test and being at a huge disadvantage as everyone else had had longer to prepare!

mumofthreekids · 19/01/2012 22:18

Now I'm an R :)

Jenstar21 · 19/01/2012 22:56

I'm an A name. An exceptionally unusual one... There's only 5 of us in the country. It makes you hugely rememberable. However, I like it. :) Even if we did ever get married, I'd keep it. It did mean that I was always first for injections, exams, etc., but did also mean you were near the beginning of the lynch queue. I reckon the rememberability (not even a word...) makes up for the always having to spell it!

dwpanxt · 20/01/2012 21:36

I really wouldn't want to be at the front of the lynch queue :D

Pootle78 · 20/01/2012 22:33

I went from b to s, at marriage class the vicar asked if I was sure I wanted to be relegated down the list!!!
