He thinks I am! I think its too dark to walk alone as its about 20 min walk plus 20 mins to his friends house 1st.
So aibu?

Yes. Yabu

callmemrs · 19/01/2012 17:38

What do you mean by 'too dark to walk alone?' Are the streets well lit? The only worry I can think of is if it's dark country lanes and there's a risk of being run over- but in that case the age would be irrelevant, as the risk is there for any age. Personally I think 12 is old enough to walk alone for 20 minutes in day light; therefore on well lit streets it's fine after sunset. It's hardly going to be late if it's to a youth club anyway. Are we talking about 7- 7.30 ish? Seems fine to me.

GypsyMoth · 19/01/2012 17:40

He's at secondary school?

yellowraincoat · 19/01/2012 17:40

Dark like the countryside or dark like London?

CuntWorm · 19/01/2012 17:40

YABU. But i can see why. You should let him go, he cant stay in from 4 onwards all winter surly?
Does he have a mobile he can call you on once he arrives?

agnesf · 19/01/2012 17:40

I would say it depends where you live. We used to live in inner city and basically streets were not very safe after dark. Where we live now its quiet, almost non existent street crime, reasonably well lit.

I would say in our situation would be fine provided he is wearing some kind of hi vis reflective thing e.g. armband or jacket markings.

In former life would not have been safe.

BuenTiempo · 19/01/2012 17:40

depends on area

Feminine · 19/01/2012 17:41

Where do you live op ?town/city I mean :)

Tortoise · 19/01/2012 17:41

There are only a few street light to his friends house. Rural area. Yes fine in daylight but not in dark. Starts at 7.30 ends at 9.

If the roads are unsafe after dark then it's a different issue. But the age won't really be relevant, because when he's 16 theres still going to be the risk of being knocked down after dark. i

Tortoise · 19/01/2012 17:44

Dark as in countryside. I can see nothing out the window. No high vis band/coat etc. Doesn't normally go out after school if does is back by 5 or gets lift home.

Feminine · 19/01/2012 17:44

Then yanbu :)

In that situation case,I'd offer a ride to an adult ...so i can see you might be uneasy.

Tricky isn't it?

ABatInBunkFive · 19/01/2012 17:45

YABU unless you live in the middle of the countryside and it is actually dark, when will he be old enough just out of interest to cope with the dark all by himself?

ABatInBunkFive · 19/01/2012 17:45

See you should have put that in the op, it's all in the details ;)

Feminine · 19/01/2012 17:46

Does he normally have hits wits about him? well as much as they do at 12?

Will he be plugged in to anything?

callmemrs · 19/01/2012 17:46

Whoops posted too soon. What I meant was, your op suggested that the age was the issue, and that he might be old enough when he's, say, 14. I think if it's really not safe on foot because of rural roads and traffic, then you need to be very honest and say that unfortunately you live in an area where he's going to need to rely on lifts. Otherwise he'll be battling you to be allowed to do this.

startail · 19/01/2012 17:50

UABU, pitch dark here no pavements. Torch, hi via jacket, no iPods and only if friend was sensible.

Tortoise · 19/01/2012 18:02

He's quite a young 12. Not sure his friend is 12 yet.
Torch died a while ago.
Sorry, will remember more info in op next time!

I don't think, (given all the details) he should :)

QuickLookBusy · 19/01/2012 18:30

YANBU
We live in the cuntryside, there are no pavements never mind street lights. Non of us would walk very far in the dark.

It's the stupid fast drivers who are the problem.

QuickLookBusy · 19/01/2012 18:46

sorry countrysideBlush

Tortoise · 19/01/2012 20:32

Lol quicklook!
He texted his dad and asked him to pick him up and bring him back. Xp comes in handy sometimes! Grin
