to think that pushchairs shouldn't be banned from RHS exhibition at Wisley?

I visited Wisley RHS Gardens yesterday and to my surprise was asked to exit swiftly as pushchairs are banned from the Butterfly exhibition they have in the tropical section of the Glasshouse. It applies at all times not just peak times.
You can park your pushchair outside in the rain and carry baby, bags and coats as well as hold on to your toddler...
Pretty much everyone who visited yesterday were either mums or grandparents with young children. I saw mums having to wake up their newborn to go in carry them, parents doing shifts outside...
Am I unreasonable to think this pushchair ban is unreasonable?

Yabu

There isn't enough room

pantspantspants · 19/01/2012 15:23

Get a sling.

I would have thought it was a space issue as well as risking rolling over butterflies on the floor or knocking them off the bushes/trees as you go passed or butterflies getting taken outside if they land on the pushchair.

Unless you DC has a medical need for the pushchair YABU.

Pootles2010 · 19/01/2012 15:27

Sorry YABU. Just leave the buggy outside, they are designed to stand up to rain! Even my local childrens centre doesn't allow buggies in, so don't see why a butterfly house should have to. Nothing more than a minor inconvenience, surely?

Labootin · 19/01/2012 15:29

They should be imprisoned for child endangerment .

( this is my stock phrase for Mn )

squeakytoy · 19/01/2012 15:31

YABU.

The butterflies land on people, and also things, so there is every chance they could get harmed or escape.

CokeZeroAddict · 19/01/2012 15:32

Sounds like a pretty crap rule to me. What happens if you turn up with non-walking-yet twins?

Labootin · 19/01/2012 15:32

Will someone think of the baybeess butterflies ?

squeakytoy · 19/01/2012 15:32

It also states it very clearly on the website too

Access to the event
Please note: prams and pushchairs are not permitted in the Glasshouse during this event.

Disabled access sessions are available. Please email [email protected] for more information.

sleepyinseattle · 19/01/2012 15:35

For what reason are they banned?

If it's space, YABU. Very. I'd rather there was space for everyone to enjoy a visit, and proper space for people who are disabled that need their room to get around.

Even if it was not very busy at the time, they probably find it easier just to ban - because if you allow at offpeak but not onpeak times, you'd face queries about 'can't you just bend the rule a little bit, it's only a couple of hours until closing' and 'but when we were here last time the buggy was fine', that sort of stuff. Easier with a blanket ban, then they and everyone else know where they stand.

WorraLiberty · 19/01/2012 15:37

YABU

I wouldn't fancy scraping butterflies off the wheels

Also, they're likely to view your buggy as a trojan horse and try to escape.

Labootin · 19/01/2012 15:38

Ha ha squeak impressive google research shame op didn't do the same

squeakytoy · 19/01/2012 15:41

I am glad the OP started the thread though.. I love Wisley so I might go next week now to see the exhibition. Grin

funnypeculiar · 19/01/2012 15:41

Just to point out - unless they are doing something different for the butterflies, there is usually a buggypark area that you can use - either in the foyer outside (I've sheltered in there in pouring rain, so things would stay dry) or sometimes in part of the greenhouse. I would just leave coats - esp kids coats there. Can't imagine anyone would want to nick a kids coat tbh. Esp Naice Wisley people.

Annoying if you weren't expecting it, but there isn't much space on those paths & I can imagine the place would be a nightmare if you allowed buggies in.

funnypeculiar · 19/01/2012 15:42

Grin squeakytoy - I am also just checking the diary to see if we can squeeze in a Wisley visit this weekend....

Meglet · 19/01/2012 15:43

It's pretty cramped in the glass house. We went to the butterfly event last year. Although we had a ratio of 4 adults and 2 pre-schoolers so it was fine without a buggy.

Mind you, I don't leave my pushchair unattended, so much stuff gets packed in it that I'd worry about it being nicked.

pantspantspants · 19/01/2012 15:44

Surely, coats either on or in the pushchair, along with nappy bag, raincover on and valuables with you and toddler under arm or walking - how old is your DC?

Can't see any real inconvenience or issue.

Tigresswoods · 19/01/2012 15:44

I like you labootin

ShatnersBassoon · 19/01/2012 15:45

YABU. It's hardly a big deal to carry a baby/child for a few yards around a display, even if you also have a bag. Jackets can be left in the pushchair, and raincover put over to keep the pushchair dry.

Honeydragon · 19/01/2012 15:48

Arf at butterfly trojan horse, it's true though, you could end up coming out with on of these
