Will this cheer you up? I have been a Topshop size 12 for years (pg excepted) and I can confirm that there is no difference between their sizes and anywhere else! In fact, I once tried on a pair of jeans in Per Una (I know, I know) and I needed a 14 :) was in Topshop skinnies at the time, size 12, bit roomy if anything.

And Topshop do size 16 anyway, get yourself down there and treat yourself to something nice to celebrate your progress! I'd love to be able to run 5k, going to try and do C25K once this baby is cooked.

Contrary to what people are saying, you don't have to increase and cut out anything. If you eat a balanced diet already (which includes chips, cake etc), then all you need to do is make sure you have the right amount of food on your plate, and eat often enough.
You shouldn't go more than 3 hours without eating, and the routine should be breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack ("snack" being a banana and a Flake, or a yogurt and a fruit etc). these meals can obv. be interchanged based on schedule etc. You should never skip one of these meals because you don't feel hungry, you should always eat them anyway.
Try and cut your plate size to 10". If you have plates that have a thin edge, you're more likely to take more than if you have plates with a broad rim (the illusion of space). Try to avoid buffets, people generally eat 2-3 times the amount they normally would at buffets. If you feel hungry, try to drink something before scoffing, thirst is quite often mistaken for hunger. If you find that lunch isn't keeping you full, try changeing your sandwitch for soup. Soup is proven to keep you fuller for longer than solid foods.
Also, fish is good, it's not very fatty but is pretty cheap and filling, for example if you make a chicken curry, swap the chicken for fish, which automatically brings the fat content down by about 1/3.

This is what the hospital has told me, and it works even though it seems like you're eating a lot!

I like the sound of that sandra! I get hungry every 2 - 3 hours and get all faint and dizzy so have to snack. I just need to snack on friut or nuts... not cake and biscuits!

I started a very similar thread on here today Grin (AIBU to expect weightloss with exercise). Some fab, knowledgable advice. Well done on the C25k, I tried it and it just wasnt for me! Im now a gym bunny instead.

OmniaParatus · 18/01/2012 18:23

Well done, I'm doing c25k and I'm on wk2. Finding it hard so you have inspired me! I've lost 1.5 stone since September doing ww, and 4 lbs in a week with diet and exercise, so I can confirm doing both is the key. I am also about 14 stone and an 18 (size 16 coat too tight) so you are definitely toned more than me( not that that's hard, I'm like a jelly! :-) )
Keep at it, I've had some nice compliments on my weight loss even though I have far to go, and that has really motivated me. Reduce your portion size and you can diet without feeling it iyswim.
Well done and good luck!

bellatrixrocks · 18/01/2012 18:24

I've been reading your thread too glaikit! Grin
was a bit shocked about the 80% diet 20% exercise thing... going to have to really focus on my diet now

thanks omnia! keep going - the first 3 weeks are hard going but it gets easier. I was so unfit before. I thought I was going to die after my first run but can keep going for 30 mins now

well done on the weightloss!

I reckon we'll all be super slim and toned by the summer

I think it depends on your starting point.

Firstly I think regardless of how much exercise you do, if you don't modify diet you aren't going to lose weight. Otherwise you end up eating more to compensate for the extra exercise. I recommend myfitnesslpal to monitor your food.

Secondly, you need to be realistic, 2lbs a week weight loss if you are superstrict about food (so a dress size every 6-8 weeks) or 1lb a week if just minor modifications) so a dress size every 12-16 weeks.

A 5km run uses up around 300-400 calories. So eat pound would need 10 runs and no extra food!

I agree about more protein and less carbs....

MorrisZapp · 20/01/2012 08:49

No way is Top Shop the same size! They are super weeny tiny. Is fact.

BsshBossh · 20/01/2012 10:48

Well done on the running and losing a dress size! I run too but have only lost weight by careful eating. For me the Paul McKenna eating principles wored best (eat only when hungry, eat slowly, eat what you want, stop eating when full) and have lost several dress sizes. Now I run (3 times a week) and eat carefully and have kept the pounds off. Good luck and keep going!

BsshBossh · 20/01/2012 10:49

*worked best

QuintessentiallyShallow · 20/01/2012 10:53

Yes. You must stop eating cake. Do you know how much you must run to shed that cake?

DH has worked out that if I am to lose nearly 1 stone in two months, I need to do one hour of cardiovascular exercise 6 out of 7 days per week, and watch my diet at the same time, ie very little carbs and NO cake. (Or any indulgence at all)

It is a matter of how much fat burning exercise you do per gram of fat lost.

However, if you want to run to ensure you stay on the same weight and can still eat cake every day, then fine!

rookiemater · 20/01/2012 10:55

Unfortunately exercise alone is not enough for major weight loss. I know this because I did two half marathons last year (and believe me I'm not one of those whippet thin marathon types) and in fact didn't lose any weight until I addressed my eating ( sadly all back on again its a work in progress)

I did however have super legs and my hips slimmed down, so its definitely worth doing it. Rather than doing more cardio, I'd add in a bit of weights - try the 30 day shred but don't do it every day which will give your body more definition and give the impression of being slimmer as you are more toned.

Needabitofsunshine · 20/01/2012 12:20

Definitely mostly diet related. I like to cut carbs and find it works well and really is ok once you get into the swing of it. You need to add in some resistance work (ie weights) and try some sprints/interval training.

Great start!
