Of all the things to latch onto about parenting, why this? Who cares if your kid watched tv in the day, or doesnt eat 5 a day, every day, or hasnt had a bath for a week, or hasn't had enough one to one contact, or enough cuddles, or enough sleep, or enough alone time, or enough attention - you weaned at 6 months, that's whats important. Not like so -and -so's kid from down the road who weaned a few weeks early, He's obviously doomed to a life of allergies and street crime.
Seriously, I'm not the only person who thinks that in a few months/years you genuinely won't give a crap, and neither will anybody else.
I understand not weaning at 'mush' stage when baby can barely hold its own head up, but telling everybody that their baby is DEFINITELY not ready for food before the magic 6 month mark is ridiculous, IMHO.
maybe it's just me who think I'll look after my own not everyone elses...

I was interested to hear from my Swedish niece that 4 months is still the recommended age to start weaning there.

ReindeerBollocks · 17/01/2012 21:14

They change the markers based on further research and have found that later weaning incourages better growth of the intestines and bowels.

However, all babies accelerate at different rates and as along as people aren't verging on ridiculous, then yes, I don't care particularly when a baby is weaned.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 17/01/2012 21:15

YANBU.

topknob · 17/01/2012 21:15

My 5 kids were weaned at 4 months except for the 2 month prem who was about 6 months...they have perfect bowels :)

annieee · 17/01/2012 21:17

Cory- my PERSONAL opinion is that 4 months is a bit young, but thats my PERSONAL opinion! Maybe some of the MNers who are so concerned with lecturing other MNers can petition the Swedish government to stop people harming their babies, if they are so certain it's doing untold damage to the wee mites...

ReindeerBollocks you sum it up perfectly :)

YABU

ReindeerBollocks · 17/01/2012 21:20

Topknob, I wasn't implying that children weaned at four months have imperfect bowels, its just a guideline based on new research,

I'm not criticising, I weaned DS at four months on guidelines, however I am trying to recognise why guidelines may change.

actually I still don't really give a fuck

pictish · 17/01/2012 21:20

YANBU!

I weaned all of mine at 4 months. Don't really give a fuck what anyone thinks about that. It suited my babies and their circumstances.

I don't give a toss who weans, when. I couldn't find the motivation to care if I tried.

bibbitybobbityhat · 17/01/2012 21:20

Oooh who's been lecturing? Can you link?

usualsuspect · 17/01/2012 21:22

I can't even remember when I weaned mine, but they are all made it to adulthood so I must have done something right .

usualsuspect · 17/01/2012 21:24

and ff

Scheherezade · 17/01/2012 21:24

Yabu, people post on here asking for (and expecting) people's personal opinions.

pictish · 17/01/2012 21:25

Well....I didn't wean - I introduced solid foods at 4 months, but kept up with the bfing alongside. Or in dd's case, the ffing.

Spike - who cares if you think it's nuts? It's not your kid is it?

northcountrygirl · 17/01/2012 21:26

I HAD to wean my DD2 at 4 months as she just wouldn't drink milk as was losing a LOT of weight. This was on the GPs advice and she's now 4 and doing fine - no allergies and a really good eater. She loves fruit and veg - just absolutely hates milk - both mine and cows it would seem.

The elder 2 were also weaned at 4 months as that was the current advice at the time. Again no problems as far as I'm aware.

GirlWithPointyShoes · 17/01/2012 21:26

Because that's the only alliterative Spike? Really?

Same with my ds1 and ds2 countrygirl - I weaned on HVs advice too, and the GP.

OhTheConfusion · 17/01/2012 21:28

DD2 (almost 5 mths) is nowhere near ready for weaning, she was 3 weeks early and is still rather tiny (almost 10lb's!). However, DD1 and DS had both began weaning by this stage.

Every baby is different and only you know your baby well enough to decide.

fifitot · 17/01/2012 21:29

Well it depends..........there seems more of a rush to wean baby early than show off about he/she not needing food yet. I was shocked once at the baby clinic with the conversation some women were having about weaning their babies, some as young as 3 months! What's the rush?

northcountrygirl · 17/01/2012 21:29

bibbity - to be fair I have seen a fair few people lecturing on this subject.

as I'm sure you will if you stick around on this thread...

SecretMinceRinser · 17/01/2012 21:29

Well YABU and YANBU imo. I weaned mine at around 6 months. DS was nearer 7 until he ate properly but I do understand that some babies NEED to wean earlier on medical advice.
In the other I know people who have weaned their kids at 8 weeks because they couldn't wait (the parents not the child!) and not told their hv 'in case they get told off'. That isn't putting your childs needs first imo and I do inwardly judge. I probably judge about some of the other things you mention in the op too though.
