I had a chest infection which has now developed into pneumonia, i was admitted into hospital on wed night. Since I've been here ive been placed in a ward full of older people who are suffering from dementia aswell as chest problems. Its freaking me the fuck out, they wont let me go home as the oxygen levels in my blood are too low. They cant understand why and now in thinking all manner of horrible things tgat maybe preventing me from getting better. Ive been for a cry in the toilet like the bloody coward i am, but i cant help it, i feel like the walls are closing in on me, all around me i see very ill old people who dont even know that they are in hospital or who ask me my name ten million tines a day. Im just freaking out and very scared and cant stop myself thinking the worst.

I am not able to go and homd hand with them as a) i'm on an oxygen madked affixed to my bed. 2) i would more than likely frighten them ad they dont know/ cant remember who i am from one minute to the next. I d ob(t kniw if its alzeimers , dementia or whatever tge cirrect term is. All i know that these ladies are very ill, confused, suffer short tern memory loss and doubly incontenent (which obviously upsets even more as they often have to wsit a while to be changed. I have tried to distract myself all day today with varying degrees of success, lots of crying in the toilet moments. The icing on the cake is that i have jyst overheard the nurses say that there has been an outbreak of diarroea(?) and 3 of thr modt vulnerable ladies on my ward have it. Im scared they'll shut the bloody ward down so no visitors. Yeah i know i sound like a sap.

coodymow Sorry to hear about your situation. You reminded me of when my mum was re-admitted to hospital with breathing problems before Christmas. Having been on an assessment unit all day, she was moved to a ward late in the evening after my father had gone home. She was put on the geriatric ward and promptly rang me (60 miles away) to ask me to get in touch with my father and send him back to collect her as there was no way she was staying on a geriatric ward with old ladies shouting out and not knowing where they were..........My mum is 82... LOL. So I can fully understand how you feel. Hope you get home soon.

Bloody hell, OP is in hospital with pneumonia and people are suggesting she take up a voluntary care assistant role?!

coodymow, you can't help how you feel. I hope you are well enough to go home soon.
