to think that dp is wrong and 6yo's still not well enough for school on Monday

My 6 yo son has had an infected throat Wed night through to Sat morning.

He hasn't been himself all weekend - for example, still hasn't got his appetite back, still gets tired very easily - is actually asking to go to bed as opposed to the usual bedtime struggle. The last time he vomited was 3pm on Friday and his fever of 39.9 broke about the same time. Today he's eaten half a toasted muffin, two small triangle sandwiches, a square of chicken, 2 baby boileds, half a banana and a rice crispie bun. This is nothing compared to the usual mountain of food, especially sunday lunch he would normally put away!

He played more today, but still spent more time lying down watching telly/reading than usual.

I still don't think he's fit for school tomorrow, dp does think he's fit? btw ds himself does want to go back...

what do you guys think?

I would keep him at home tomorrow and see how he is

I would see how he is in the morning and then decide. If in doubt keep him home but if he seems ok send him in and have a quiet word with the teacher to say if he seems overly tired to call and you will pick him up.

Hi all

Thanks for the replies so far - I haven't posted before so wasn't sure what to expect.

Have uniform etc ready for tomorrow so I will get him up in the morning and suss him out then!

Thanks again!

I would not send him. Need a day to feed him up and get him back to normal.

Nanny0gg · 15/01/2012 22:01

He's 6.
Won't be missing anything that crucial.
Especially if he's still sleeping, leave him and keep him at home.

BellaVita · 15/01/2012 22:03

Needs to be kept at home another day.

grubbalo · 15/01/2012 22:07

If he wants to go, I'd send him (telling his teacher that you'll ring at lunchtime, and collect as necessary)
But I'm quite mean!

slowburner · 15/01/2012 22:18

I have found as an adult that when I feel better (especially throat infections) I need another 24 hours before I go back to usual activity levels, I know children often go downhill fast and bounce back fast but I think another day would not be unreasonable.

Certainly judgement call in the morning, I'd say either he is better or he isn't rather than a half day, but if he gets worn out tomorrow he'll have a week before he can truly rest again. Our GP always tells me that it is better to trust my instincts and that If DD is under the weather she is more likely to pick up other colds or bugs.

I hope your ds is much better soon :)

youarekidding · 15/01/2012 22:37

I wouldn't send him. My DS had a ENT infection at a similar age and didn't eat for 5 days. Sad I waited a further 2 before he went back to school because I thought lack of food and post viral slump would leave him susceptable to anything else doing the rounds. As it was DS got slapped cheek and then another cold/ virus within the month after this infection. (not saying it will happen but backing up your argument for full recovery before return!)

If he's well enough he could do some fun educational games on the computer tomorrow.

EnjoyResponsibly · 15/01/2012 22:42

Keep him and be prepared to wish you hadnt at around 10.30 Grin

upahill · 15/01/2012 22:44

Se how things are in the morning.
A good night sleep and he could be a different boy.

RainboweBrite · 15/01/2012 22:46

Sounds like he needs another day off to fully recover to me, but see how he is in the morning.

DaisySteiner · 15/01/2012 22:49

In this house the person who will be looking after the ill child makes the decision! Will either of you need to take time off work?

christinabell · 15/01/2012 22:51

EnjoyResponsibly I was beginning to wish he was at school already today so yes grubbalo I can be quite mean too (and normally would have sent him to school without a 2nd thought before becoming a lazy PhD student Wink )

thanks slowburner! all very supportive replies guys!

ha DaisySteiner! x posted! funny you should mention it, I will take the time off from PhD writing, dp will go to work as normal. As my PhD isn't real work, and I won't lose renumeration,it doesn't 'matter'... irony anyone!?

I'm really strict about school attendance (DS1 has 100% after 2yrs) but my kids and DH have had this all over Christmas and it's taken them all about 3 weeks to get totally back to normal.

It's a weird bug...doesn't seem to be nasal at all. Just a nasty cough, sore throat, no energy or appetite.

My 9yr old DS is only just returning to school tomorrow after having 8 school days off and then 2 weekends...so he's been ill for 12 days, and there's no way he could have gone to school.

DH hasn't had a day off work in nearly 3 years and yet he had a week off with this.

I really wouldn't hurry your child back to school if he's still unwell in the morning.

Cherriesarelovely · 15/01/2012 23:11

Keep him off tomorrow OP. It is one thing feeling a bit better chilling out and resting at home and a whole different thing coping with the hustle and bustle of a school day!

slowburner · 15/01/2012 23:15

OP I am a phd student too, and yup every time there is a work life conflict work suffers, DH admits to me he doesn't see it as real work. I am funded so although bring in money it won't be till I run over that the consequences of him never taking time off become apparent.

christinabell · 15/01/2012 23:24

Gah phds! they don't call it a marathon for nothing do they slowburner!? good luck with it though!

Completely agree Cherries!

Rule here if DD2 doesn't want to wake up and says she feels ill she probably is.
If DD1 doesn't want to get up and says she feels rough poke her with the cattle prod. If she still moans check she wasn't reading till 2am if she was you'll need to administer hugs and tea.
Only if cajoling and tea fail should you consider she is ill.
Both had a variation of the sore throat, upset stomach, no eating no energy bug over Christmas. If your DS has had that one he may need tomorrow off. Neither felt great for best part of a week and neither generally does more than two days being I'll at once.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 16/01/2012 00:06

I'd keep him off. You don't want him going back a day and then needing hte rest of the week off. Being OK at home is very different from coping with school. Plus he will be an easy target for all the other bugs flying around at school.
