AIBU to think that heating your house with an Aga or Rayburn using sustainably sourced wood is more responsible than turning the effin oil or gas ch on?

Re: previous thread on agas. Those of us who choose to use sustainable fuel are not stupid, we're bloody clever, 'cos it's cheaper than oil as well. So there.

wood is not majoritively sustainable. it was ditched by the Elisabethans in favour of coal for a reason - they started to run out of trees.

so fine for a few people, not workable for everyone.

EdlessAllenPoe · 15/01/2012 17:17

and wood is an effort as well....

really things like wind/solar i think are the true 'sustainables' though they both hav their own problems as well.

what the fuel of the future will be : who knows?

troisgarcons · 15/01/2012 17:20

Yes. But. I'd have to destroy the local park. A year or two in advance. To dry the wood so it didnt make nasty green smoke and upset al lthe other MN-ers who will complain and invoke the Clean Air Act and have me prosecuted.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 15/01/2012 17:33

I agree with you. If you'd like to buy me an aga, and a house big enough to accommodate it, I will happy use whatever type of fuel you would like me to.

tunnelmaniac · 15/01/2012 17:38

Lol, but surely Aga owners have their own land? They are usually the posh ones, whereas us lowly folk in the country have Rayburns. Also, they are very different, Agas are cookers which might heat the hot water and therefore are a bit of a luxury, whereas Rayburns are boilers which do hot water and rads and also cook. Oh and they dry your wellies, keep lambs warm and iron the clothes.
Wood might take some effort, but exercise in the fresh air is cheaper than gym membership!

You need wood for an AGA? I always thought they were powered by their owners' sense of self satisfaction.

Heleninahandcart · 15/01/2012 18:48

Ah yes, the Agas that are so efficient and green and warm up the entire mansion house. Whenever I go to visit friends in the cuntreh it's so cold that a slanket starts to look attractive.

PreviouslyonLost · 15/01/2012 18:53

Paying >£90 for few weeks worth of wood, oil fired CH as an alternative, no Aga, and coal to supplement multi-fuel stove...heat costs, end of, in this day and age Sad
