the ubiquitous use of the phrase 'right now'

.. even in period dramas for goodness sake. I spotted it in some of the Dickens' adaptations over the Christmas period.

Drives me NUTS.

At the moment folks, at the moment

Maybe I'm just feeling mellow today, but that kind of thing doesn't bother me at all.

I only get a tiny bit irked when I see signs in shops that contain misspelled words, or a legal document or some correspondence from a headteacher with mistakes etc.

iamabadger · 15/01/2012 13:17

Not as irritating as "at this point...." makes me itch.

springydaffs · 15/01/2012 13:21

The point being that Dickens wouldn't have been familiar with 20th century americanisms, is all. I don't mind the 'right now' thing in general though it's a bit irritating , just inauthentic in period dramas, with them all dressed up and talking like they're on a Friends set.

If we're on irritating phrases (which we weren't), 'is it not time' is the one that makes me want to throw a boot at somebody. So pompous.

What's even worse is when you find yourself using the same phrases :P

I had to become used to 'right now' because, in South Africa, it means ' in a minute' ie 'a bit later'.

Proudnscary · 15/01/2012 14:04

This used to drive me mad - but like many Americanisms that have crept into the UK ('playdate' 'you guys' 'movies') I've got used to it now.

AriesWithBellsOn · 15/01/2012 14:07

I loathe it as well, and I thought I was the only one :). Whenever a British person says "Right now" on the TV, I shout "AT THE MOMENT, STUPID!" at the TV.

Possibly my issue rathern than theirs.

springydaffs · 15/01/2012 14:53

hand up, I often use americanisms. I used one up there ^

But I wouldn't write them into a screenplay for a period drama

Hmmm .......

" DS!........PUT THAT DOWN!........AT THE MOMENT! "

Not sure it has quite the same ring to it! Grin

DoMeDon · 15/01/2012 15:32

DS!.......PUT THAT DOWN...........IMMEDIATELY!

Grin
passionsrunhigh · 16/01/2012 00:37

or (Put that down) 'This Minute!'
but then it's all 'kids', not 'children', and it's now accepted by all, incl MN.

squeakytoy · 16/01/2012 00:40

"put that down NOW!"

ThePathanKhansWitch · 16/01/2012 00:57

Going forward... makes me want to kill someone every time i hear it.

NadiaWadia · 16/01/2012 01:12

Agree ThePathan - only idiots seem to say this - what's wrong with say ' in the future'?

TroublesomeEx · 16/01/2012 05:29

I stamp on all Americanisms in our house:

"If they want us, they'll have to invade us and take us. We're not handing ourselves to them on a plate".

I don't say "kids" either.
