to wonder if it is a myth that children lose the ability to suck?

don't get it.

surely adults can suck thumbs, or lollies.

it is always a comback in extended breastfeeding discussions that children eventually are unable to attatch and suck at a breast.

where is the evidence that a mouth changes shape so radically?

is this 'losing the ability to suck' a myth perpetuated by those who find breastfeeding intimidating and/or wrong beyond infacy?

I didn't BF my DCs for medical reasons so don't know what it feels like. People Children suck drinks through straws. Is there any difference?

The action of sucking is different. Have you ever watched a baby with a dummy? They are not sucking on it the way me and you would in an Shock mouth action they are flicking their Tongue and the jaw moves in a more chewing motion than sucking. It is an ability that most although not all people so lose usually around 8 years old.

YANBU to wonder - However itt's a different type of sucking mechanism. Sucking, say, throguh a straw involves a different motion to nursing. THey lose the ability once the adult molars are through.
