To not take son to OOH?

Son has had a red, blotchy rash since Friday night. He's not ill, no temperature - mostly on his face, arms, legs and bottom - nothing on his tummy. I suspect that it may be slapped cheek, although am basing that on google images. AIBU not to sit for hours at OOH today (as my MIL thinks that I should) given that he's not in the slightest bit unwell or am I being a bad mother to not take him?

Do you need a diagnosis for nursery? I think if there is no temp, he is not unwell then monitor it at home, check temp and it is as you say likely to be a viral thing that they won't do anything for anyway.

I guess MIL might be worried it is a meningitis type rash - but it obviously isn't

I wouldn't- but I practically never take mine to the doctor anyway.

Is it itchy? You haven't changed your washingbpowder or anything like thwt hqve you?

It might be q good idea to keep him away from other children or pregnant people just in case it turns into something, but apart from that, I would carry on, keeping a close eye on it.

Thanks. No, no diagnosis needed as he is looked after by family in the afternoon (nursery in the mornings). It's not meningitis type - I got him with the glass on Friday night. Feel a bit better now - was starting to feel a bit guilty - after 6am phonecall to see if we'd been!!

YANBU but you also might not be waiting for hours. I often go to OOH and usually in and out. Mine is usually middle of the night, granted.

StealthPolarBear · 15/01/2012 06:58

oh and how old is he?
I have had meningitis - and managed to have a rash which passed the glass test, administered by my mum, who's a nurse.

No, not changed washing powder or anything and he says it's not itchy. Was going to give him some Piriton anyway (just in case) but bottle said 6 years and over. I kept him in with me all day yesterday as had slapped cheek scare when I was pregnant with him. I'm guessing that it's too late to keep him away from his brother as they are both snuggled up in our bed eating toast. Think that I might join them!

You could always ring NHS Direct. They are helpful. Telephone 0845 4647.

StealthPolarBear · 15/01/2012 06:59

that said if he's had it since Friday and not deteriorated I think it's unlikely to be meningitis

Ooh that's a worry then - the glass is my checker!! . He's just 4 but not in the slightest bit ill at the moment. His cheeks have changed from a mottled red rash to bright red with the odd white bits this morning which is why I was guessing slapped cheek but I didn't realised that it could spread. I could just be a random viral thing though I suppose.

More toast for all, tea for you and back to bed. Sounds lovely.

I think that I will ring NHS direct if only so that I can tell MIL that I have done it.
